Cry Macho (2021, D: Eastwood) - S: Eastwood

EXCLUSIVE: Even as the industry slowly gets back to work, Clint Eastwood looks to be moving quickly to get his next movie going. Deadline hears the iconic director is coming on to direct and star in Cry Macho for Warner Bros. While it’s unknown about a start date or when it might be released, sources say Eastwood has already begun scouting locations for the shoot.

Knowing how quick Eastwood’s shoots can go, insiders add the film could be in front of audiences by next winter. Sources add that the film does not have a formal greenlight.

Al Ruddy and Jessica Meier are producing, along with Tim Moore and Eastwood at Malpaso. N. Richard Nash, who wrote the novel Cry Macho, penned the script along with Nick Schenk.

Based on the book, the film will star Eastwood as a onetime rodeo star and washed-up horse breeder who, in 1978, takes a job from an ex-boss to bring the man’s young son home and away from his alcoholic mom. Crossing rural Mexico on their back way to Texas, the unlikely pair faces an unexpectedly challenging journey, during which the world-weary horseman may find his own sense of redemption through teaching the boy what it means to be a good man. The New York Times described it as a morality tale about two characters who help each other through tough transitions.

When it comes to the acting part, it hasn’t always been a given that Eastwood would also act in the films he was directing; he usually leaned toward staying behind the camera rather then do both. In recent years, he has been drawn to material that allows for both, most recently him starring and directing the 2018 thriller The Mule.

If Eastwood is starting and directing they better get a move on. For, um, no reason...

Incredible.

My guess is they will be done shooting by the end of November.

His Mom lived to 97. He might have some time on the clock left.

The great director, Manoel de Oliveira, was making films up until he was 103. Eastwood may have a few more films left.

Given the time period, I wouldn't be surprised if we get the story told in flashback with wraparound segments of the adult kid played by Bradley Cooper.

Maybe as director but is anyone excited anymore to see old, frail Clint slowly shuffle around on camera?

Re: Cry Macho (2021, D: Eastwood) - S: Eastwood

Warner Bros. will open Cry Macho from Clint Eastwood on Oct. 22. The multi-Oscar winner will star and direct the feature based on N. Richard Nash’s novel.

The pic will hit theaters and HBO Max day-and-date as that’s Warner Bros.’ plan for its 2021 slate.

Eastwood stars as a one-time rodeo star and washed up horse breeder who, in 1978, takes a job from an ex-boss to bring the man’s young son home and away from his alcoholic mom. Crossing rural Mexico on their back way to Texas, the unlikely pair faces an unexpectedly challenging journey, during which the world-weary horseman may find his own sense of redemption through teaching the boy what it means to be a good man.

Nick Schenk and Nash co-wrote the screenplay. Eastwood, Albert S. Ruddy, Tim Moore and Jessica Meier produce. Eastwood stars with Eduardo Minett, Dwight Yoakam.

Sounds like blatant Oscar bait material

So did "The Mule", for that matter. When it came out, I figured he was a shoe-in for a "Career Oscar". The film just never took off.

91 year old Eastwood didn’t let a fucking virus stop him from making this movie. Comes out September 17 now.

Didn't realize he directed as well, what a legend. Trailer didn't really hook me as much as I'd hoped, but count me in (at least from home!)

I'll watch it on HBO MAX. Clint's gotta save the Mexicans from themselves in this one.

I get that he has a reputation for being a badass but I’m not sure I buy 90 year old, frail-ass Clint Eastwood punching out Mexican cock-fighting Bandidos.

Since it’ll be on HBOmax, I’ll give it a watch though.

Got to say, that trailer did not make me want to see the movie at all.

The trailer didn't do much for me either, but if it is on the same level as The Mule, I'm fine with it. Not one of his best movies, but still a good one.

There was a gentle, stripped-down version of the main theme to The Mission in the commercial that ran during the Field of Dreams game tonight. A really gentle, beautiful version, fit the imagery in the commercial well.

Here's the original. The music cue in the commercial was what comes at the 1:53 mark:

The Mission soundtrack is absolutely beautiful. Another legendary Ennio Morricone score.
