Kim Shattuck of The Muffs dies at age 56

Wow. This one hurts a lot. Saw them a ton of times. Apparently she'd been dealing with ALS the last two years.

If you never heard of them, you really missed out.

I had no idea she was battling ALS. Fucking bummer.

I was completely blindsided when I saw this on Facebook a few minutes ago. I had no idea she was fighting ALS either.

Re: Kim Shattuck of The Muffs dies at age 56

Veruca Salt just posted this on Facebook.

Kim Shattuck was a force of nature, a beautiful person, and a good friend. We cannot believe she has left us. Nina and I had the honor of singing our favorite Muffs songs with her in 2017. We filmed it for a video podcast that is now stuck in legal limbo, and we’re probably not supposed to show it to you, but fuck it. This is “Funny Face”. And we share it with all the love in our hearts.

Very sad. The Muffs were one of my favorite bands back in the early/mid 90s.

One thing jumped out at me from this: GO SEE YOUR FAVORITE BANDS LIVE!

While I never missed a local Muffs show, the day Kim died I had been waffling about going to a Stiff Little Fingers concert that night; it was mid-week, in a venue I hate, and I was light on cash having just paid my mortgage and it was still a few days away from payday. Kim's passing removed all doubt. I went to the show, and had a great time. Now, I'm not wishing anything bad on Jake and the boys, and I sure hope SLF returns again in a year or so, but if for some reason that was the last-ever SLF show in town, I can be happy knowing I was there.

I'm heartbroken. I've known Kim since she was in The Pandoras. She was so talented and a nice person. Very cool and funny.

Videos aren't up on YouTube (yet), but you can find them on Instagram. Last night, surviving band members Ronnie Barnett and Roy McDonald joined The Linda Lindas on stage to perform the song Big Mouth. It was the first time they have performed a Muffs song live since Kim's passing.

I missed this news when it first hit and had no idea. I saw The Muffs live once in the late 90s as part of an anniversary concert festival for our local indie station (also RIP) and enjoyed their set. They went on a profanity-laced jam session between two songs that got the biggest cheers of the night.

Kim would have been 62 years old today.

The band is fresh in my mind also because earlier this week, bassist Ronnie Barnett posted this photo:

Yes, that's Ronnie and Kim on stage in 2015, but the 3 little girls dancing in the lower left are Lucia, Eloise, and Mila (just 4 years old!) of The Linda Lindas. Who would have thought that Ronnie and Roy would be the guests of THEM on stage ten years after this picture was taken?

Anyway, I think I'll put Blonder and Blonder on the turntable today...

Well their other 15 seconds in the sun in the 90s came in a Fruitopia commercial:

ETA:

One more:

Too bad The Muffs didn't get the future success of a couple people in this scene...
