I'm about to start building a sound system for my husband for his birthday and anniversary. Looking to spend about $100 for birthday and $300 for anniversary. So this will take a few years. What's the total price for everything, 2k? 4k? It is just for PC gaming, no movies. What's a good order I can buy stuff in so that he can use what he has so far as I buy? I know nothing about sound. I think regular PC speakers are fine Thanks!

If he wants a good quality headset for gaming, look at Steel Series. Most comfortable I've used and they sound great. I have the Acrtis 7 Wireless, IIRC.

Can it really be a good "surround sound" experience with headphones? That's his main goal. He plays a tank game a lot and he wants to hear shots buzzing all around him and driving sounds.

Yes, for sure. And the rise of competitive FPS games have made them even better.
