Midnight Mass (Netflix) - created by Mike Flanagan - premieres 9/24/21
EXCLUSIVE: The Haunting of Hill House’s Mike Flanagan and Trevor Macy are expanding their portfolio at Netflix. The streaming platform has ordered a second series from the duo titled Midnight Mass. It stems from the multi-year TV deal Netflix signed with Flanagan, Macy and their Intrepid Pictures earlier this year.
The seven-episode Midnight Mass follows an isolated island community experiences miraculous events – and frightening omens – after the arrival of a charismatic, mysterious young priest. Flanagan will direct and serve as an executive producer alongside Macy. The project has no relation to the Midnight, Mass Vertigo comics.
The pickup for Midnight Mass follows the breakout success of The Haunting of Hill House, which led to Netflix ordering a second installment,The Haunting of Bly Manor, turning the series into a horror franchise.
Based on the book of the same name by Shirley Jackson, The Haunting Of Hill House starred Michiel Huisman, Elizabeth Reaser, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Kate Siegel, Victoria Pedretti, Carla Gugino, Henry Thomas and Timothy Hutton.
Pedretti returns as star of The Haunting of Bly Manor, based on Henry James psychological gothic horror novella, which is set to debut in 2020.
Filmmaker Flanagan and producer Macy first collaborated on the 2014 feature Oculus. They continued to work together in the horror and thriller realm with Gerald’s Game, Hush and Before I Wake, all of which have streamed on Netflix, before the duo expanded their collaboration to TV with The Haunting Of Hill House.

This little island, so sleepy it might be dead. The isolated community on Crockett Island experiences miraculous events - and frightening omens – following the arrival of a charismatic, mysterious young priest. An original series from Mike Flanagan come to Netflix on September, 24th.
From The Haunting of Hill House creator Mike Flanagan, MIDNIGHT MASS tells the tale of a small, isolated island community whose existing divisions are amplified by the return of a disgraced young man (Zach Gilford) and the arrival of a charismatic priest (Hamish Linklater). When Father Paul’s appearance on Crockett Island coincides with unexplained and seemingly miraculous events, a renewed religious fervor takes hold of the community - but do these miracles come at a price?

I've watched the first 4 episodes. So far so good. If you aren't feeling it...stick through until Episode 3 atleast.
The Atmos soundtrack rocks.
Also... nice to see Flanagan finally get this story to come to fruition...

Finished it. Still digesting it. The title tells it all. The main plot point doesn't thrill me but I rolled with it. Anyone catch Henry Thomas? I could see it would be easy for him to blend in with the the island citizens.

Can you believe that his wife was played by Kristin Lehman?

The makeup was a little distracting…in the sense I was questioning if that is who I thought it was. I recognized Thomas right away… but I was like that can’t be Michael Trucco. Lehman was completely unrecognizable. I did see through it on Alex Essoe.

I’m a big fan of Flanagan’s and this is probably my favorite thing he’s done. A lot of horror has attempted to critique religious fervor, but it often strikes me as at least a bit hamfisted. This really hit the mark in my book.
At least in American evangelicalism, there’s a metric shit ton of moral relativism wrapped up in the guise of god’s mysterious ways. As someone raised in a fundamentalist bubble, the justifications these characters made and the way they wrapped them up in self-assured faith really struck an authentic chord with me. Just an excellent use of classic horror as semi-allegorical criticism, with fantastic writing, acting and direction.

Yep, this was really good. Finished the last episode last night.
The Bev character in particular was all too real in terms of her general bullshit and attitude towards others.

Wow, this to me was the worst of the batch from Flanagan I was really hoping for more after the 5th episode but the religious aspect was played too heavily for me. This is one series I don't see myself visiting again at all. Honestly by the last episode, I was hoping for them all to die.
I think the best part was the end of ep 5 on the boat and that is all I can say without spoilers. It was well done considering the source material but it did not resonate with me at all. The acting was good as was the production but it just fell flat in the end.

Like mentioned above, episodes five's final few seconds was some fun editing and probably the show's main stab at something visceral.
Everything is so subdued it feels real. Like if it happens in real life, that's how it goes down. Much like a slow moving pandemic.
If you're bored, you'll find that nothing gets revealed until episode four (I think it was four). I had no idea where it was going.
I don't care if there is another season. It had an ending.

Might check this out at some point.
Quite a few here seem to like this, but the trailer did nothing for me.

^ thank goodness, too.
That would have cheapened the effect, IMO. If I'd have known going into this it'd be that kind of story, I probably would have skipped it. Not because I hate those stories, but I'm indifferent to them.
This one, I liked a lot.
