YouTube and UMG to remaster 100s of old music videos!

I thought this was pretty cool, and hopefully other labels do the same. I wasn't totally blown away by the video quality since most appear to still be SD upconverts, but the sound quality was quite good.

Our videos have been remastered and to kick things off, you can watch “Holy Wars…The Punishment Due” in HD RIGHT NOW on YouTube Music!

Interesting. Like any other restoration there will be controversy. If they’re going back to original film elements the cutting may be different, or fades and desolves may be incorrect or missing. A major HD restoration of Baywatch occurred recently and while the show looks amazing, there were drastic changes made.

I don't even care about the remastering; I just wanna watch an 80s video that isn't a VHS rip from recorded MTV broadcasts.

Can they turn a 4:3 video to 16:9?

So many music videos from the '80s were filmed in digital though....

Why would anyone want that if it was originally created that way?

What do you mean? Do you mean filmed on video tape? That is true, and restoring them would be a different process.

Yeah. Not much you can do to clean video up. Far from what can be done with film.

I would wager that the vast majority of music videos from the 80s and 90s were shot and or edited quick and dirty on tape, which would limit how much they could be improved.

Even if they were shot on film, I'd be surprised if the film elements are still available.

Re: YouTube and UMG to remaster 100s of old music videos!

The article mentions that the new uploads are replacing the old ones and those who have them saved to "favorites" already will get the new versions there. Wish I knew how to do that with my videos, I've been upscaling my old stuff so it plays in the proper frame rate which YouTube's standard-def video can't do. Some of my stuff has been linked to in articles so I don't want to delete those without any redirection to their replacements.

Looks like Sony Music Entertainment is following along.

Original:
2019 HD Remaster:

Even forcing it to 480p (same as the original), the difference is night-and-day.

Damn cool.

Also agreed, but if they can do as good a job as shown for the above post, even better!

It's very good. To be fair, there IS a bit of excessive digital edge enhancement and noise reduction going on in that remastered version, but I'd still take it over the VHS-quality version.

How can we easily find out which videos have been remastered?

I'm thinking the same on both of these. I think it's highly unlikely that the majority of them that were shot on film still have any existing film elements at all. Or if there were any (in UMG's case), they were probably destroyed in that Universal fire that destroyed a huge amount of their music masters.

Billy Idol was on the Today show and he said all of his music videos have been remastered.
