This summer, Danny McBride (Eastbound & Down, Vice Principals) returns to HBO with The Righteous Gemstones, a new comedy series that tells the story of a world-famous televangelist family with a long tradition of deviance, greed and charitable work. John Goodman, Danny McBride, Edi Patterson, Adam Devine, Cassidy Freeman, Tony Calvero, Tim Baltz and Greg Alan Williams star.

This looks very promising. Vice Principals was one of the highlights of last year's TV. Also, I've always been fascinated with the evangelical preacher world this is set in. And I never get tired of seeing John Goodman. Looking forward to it.

This premiered last night. Holy shit did it take a sort of dark turn at the end. It was fantastic. Casting was great. I'm pretty much on board anything that Danny McBride does on TV. He's had two home runs on HBO, so this seems like it might be his third.

We were able to see a sneak peek last week at Alamo Drafthouse and loved it, as well. Great cast and I'm looking forward to more of McBride's style of humor.

Show is ok. Typical McBride stuff. I have a feeling Goodman’s character is going to be killed off pretty soon.

Eastbound And Down & Vice Principles are classics IMHO. But I'm not impressed with this one so far. It's not funny. Not even in the Danny McBride way. Sticking with it though.

I’m kind of the opposite. I really liked Vice Principals and think The Righteous Gemstones is funny and has a good balance of comedy and drama. There were some parts of Eastbound and Down that I thought were funny but, IMO, Kenny Powers was just too much of an asshole to really enjoy the show as a whole. McBride seems for more likable in this and VP than he was in EB&D.

McBride as an actor has had a strange effect on me. When he first hit the scene I thought he was annoying as hell. I could barely stand him but over the years I’ve actually grown to be a pretty big fan. He even surprised me when he stepped out of his comfort zone for Halloween and Alien: Covenant. He seems like the type of guy I’d like to go out and have a beer with.

I liked EB&D, but I enjoyed Vice Principals even more. A lot of that had to do with Walton Goggins simply destroying me every time he was in a scene. I think Gemstones will end up being closer to VP and I am enjoying it quite a bit.

John Goodman and Walton Goggins are too good for this show. Cassidy Freeman is pretty damn hot.

How much of the show is ad-libbed?

I wasn’t a big fan after the premiere, but the last 2 episodes have been much better.

Edi Patterson annoyed me a bit on VP, but she is hilarious on this.

I could never get into Eastbound and Down but really liked Vice Principals, and so far I'm liking this one too. So they really have churches like this in some parts of the US right? Huge stadiums and churches in malls like they show here? Coming from a mostly secular country it seems really bizarre to me, and almost adds a layer of otherworldliness to the show.
