Georgia Engel, ‘The Mary Tyler Moore Show,’ dies at 70: reports

Rip

the new york times reports that engel, a christian scientist, did not go to doctors and her cause of death isn’t known, according to a family friend of the actress.

She was 70 years old.

RIP

I'm surprised she was only 70. It just feels like all the adult actors from MTM 'should be' older than that. She was only 24 when she first appeared.

Ted Knight was 25 years her senior!

Yea, I was surprised she was only 70 as well.
I was thinking she was a senior when she was on "Coach", but doing the calculations - she first appeared on the show at 43 and was 48 in the series finale. That doesn't jibe with me - especially since I'm 49.

Well actresses do occasionally lie about their age but it really seems like people looked older than they were back then. There was a thread about this not long ago about how freaking old some people looked when they were relatively young by today's standards. Roy Orbison looked to be in his 60s but died at 52 IIRC....

When I first saw her current age I though it was a misprint. The age one that gets me is that Whitman Mayo (Grady) did Sanford and Son from age 42-46.

Very sad. 70 is not that old.

So we've had a few people from The Mary Tyler Moore Show die, but Valerie Harper, who was supposed to be dead 6 years ago, is still alive. As is Betty White who is 97, and Ed Asner at 89.

But Engel might still be alive if she weren't a follower of, "Christian Science." Maybe.

Gavin Macleod too, even though I always think of him as having died years ago.

georgia engel's unique quirk and innocent whimsy was magical in front of a tv camera and the show's live audience.
she belonged to a special niche of female tv actresses who made it in the hollywood and televison medium without having to be pretty, smart, nude or scandalous:: such were the wholesome comedic actresses such as lucille ball, carol channing and carol burnette (who is alive and still working).

RIP sweet georgia peace xoxox
