From the producers of "The Good Place" comes a hilariously aspirational new comedy about the best bar in San Diego, home to good prices, great company and, of course, Abby. This unlicensed, makeshift bar nestled in her backyard is the opposite of everything annoying about today's party scene. There are rules at Abby's: no cell phones (not even to "look something up"), earning a seat at the bar takes time and losing a challenge means drinking a limey, sugary "not-beer" drink. As the oddball cast of regulars will tell you, hanging out at Abby's is a coveted honor. But once you're in, you're family. The cast includes Natalie Morales, Nelson Franklin, Kimia Behpoornia, Jessica Chaffin, Leonard Ouzts and Neil Flynn. Josh Malmuth will write and executive produce. Pamela Fryman will direct and executive produce the pilot. Michael Schur and David Miner also executive produce. "Abby's" is produced by Universal Television, Fremulon and 3 Arts Entertainment.

I found this a little lackluster but keeping in mind it was the first episode. For a live audience the laughter seemed canned and forced. Still having trouble separating Neil Flynn from Mike Heck. Of course when The Middle started I still saw him as The Janitor.

I will continue to watch but if it is cancelled after 1 season I will not lament the shows passing. It is not a good show but I like the main cast and hope it gets better after the show gets its sea legs.

I just finished watching this. It was about average. Comedies in general take time to get going. I'll keep watching for now.

So the history on this is that Mike Schur thinks Cheers is the greatest sitcom of all time, and this is his 2019 take on that premise.
I won't judge this by its pilot because this was SO awkward in its labor to explain the premise and the characters. I can't for the life of me begin to understand why Schur put in all that stuff about the bar having all those rules. It was such a writer's conceit that they needed to do more to make this place quirky and an extension of Abby's complicated personality. Cheers (the bar) wasn't quirky. The people were quirky. The premise that Abby has all these rules did not make the place seem charming or inviting (like a place a viewer would want to visit).
Since I live in Austin, I have to wonder if this premise was inspired by what happened to Rainey Street here. An isolated little residential neighborhood on the edge of downtown was rezoned and people started turning their homes into backyard bars, coinciding with the craft beer thing.

Still not a good show but I am still watching. As the cliche goes, I have seen worse. If it is canceled no big deal but for now it is an easy enough watch while goofing on my tablet.

We've been watching this but it's not really very good. Just every aspect of it seems stupid. But it gives us enough chuckles that we watch it "because nothing else is on".

I never like seeing folks out of work but this show was just never very good. The whole premise was stupid. The acting wasn't good. The writing wasn't good.
Other than that it was fantastic.
