Back when Circuit City still had stores, it was all the rage. I always used to get replacement plans on game consoles, but they're too expensive on TVs. My main thing is that I don't want refurbished shit though. If something goes wrong, I want to take it back to the store to exchange for a brand new one the same day. Quick and painless. I'm looking at probably buying 2 new TVs later this year. I'm liking the 55" Sony X950G reviews. I passed on last year's model because the input lag on 1080p sources was a joke compared to cheaper models, and I thought it was fucking stupid all 4 inputs weren't full bandwith. I've got a TCL P617 and R617 and they're both shit. The P617 ended up with dust inside the screen, which is driving me nuts. The R617 turns off every so often for no reason.

People still buy them, I'm sure they're a huge profit center for Best Buy. But if you want to buy a TV and return it if defective, just go to Costco (if you have a membership).

No Costco here. There's Sam's Club, but their selection usually sucks.

So we're moving really soon and we'll need to replace the appliances in the new place pretty quickly (stove and fridge) and we were actually wondering if replacement plans for large appliances like this are worth it (any store, not just Best Buy)
Yeah, asking if we want a plan for a $5 DVD is silly, but I could kinda see it for an appliance. What's the forum's opinion?

Ive been in my current home for 10+ years, my washer has been fine, my dryer I've replaced the heating element (15 bucks shipped) a couple of times, when we remodeled we replaced the dishwasher with a quieter one and we replaced the kitchen stove. The old kitchen stove had an issue from a power surge, I think the light inside went out and the convection fan died on it at that time and we lived with it for a year or two, but otherwise we haven't had too many issues with any major appliances. Most things that will break do so in fairly short order in my experience so I don't tend to waste money on protection plans. We did one on our couch and could not collect which seems a common issue with the insurance. I would save my money. Check the terms and conditions on your consumer credit card Visa/ MC etc, some companies automatically double the mfr warranty. A home depot or sears card would not offer that extra benefit.

A lot of these "deals" also cover from the time of purchase when a factory warranty is in effect as well so they pretend to cover you longer than they really do which irks me.

I bought a Geek Squad 2 year warranty on my $300 Samsung S3 Frontier watch for $60. It includes "Wear & Tear". After 23 1/2 months I took my beat-up watch in and they swapped it, at no cost, for a brand new one. I'm wearing that one now. As they made the swap they asked if I would like to spend another $60 for another 2 years of coverage. I said that yes, I certainly would. Now in another 2 years or so, I will get another of these smart watches that don't last longer than 2 years -- probably an upgraded model to boot.
It's a fantastic deal.

My understanding is that you are better off buying a replacement plan from SquareTrade than from a retailer. They are cheaper and the policies aren't really any different.

I bought one when I bought a gaming headset since they never seem to last very long. I also get them with video game systems.
