Mike "Beard Guy" Taylor (Walk off the Earth) dead.

Walk Off the Earth band member Mike Taylor dead

The band's probably best known to Americans for their cover of "Somebody That I Used to Know":

Darn it. Way too young. Really talented band with loads of creativity; they deserve to be known as more than a gimmick band.

Wow, I saw them at a benefit concert local in Dayton a few years back and have been following them ever since. Sad to hear.

Very sad to hear, especially at such a young age, but honestly I've never even heard of these guys.

Even if DVDTalk was your only online activity the past 5 years, I’m not sure how you missed that Gotye cover.

Even more puzzling since he's Canadian

I wasn't a huge fan of the band or anything, but I did like the Gotye cover (better than the original IMO) and a few other songs. I honestly thought they'd get a bigger following in the US, and even Canada.

Here's a couple of original songs of theirs in which I may have posted at some point in the "favorite songs" thread:

Missed it completely and what the fuck is Gotye?

Yeah, that is puzzling. In my defense, I'm over 50 years old, and very rarely listen to the radio, it's mostly Spotify/vinyl/CDs for me, and mostly hard rock/metal, so perhaps that's why they flew under my radar?

You stolye my answers verbatim. Except that I'm (still) well under 50 and don't listen to metal.

That cover of "Somebody..." is the thing I know them by most, but I still follow them on Facebook and Youtube. Very sad to hear about such a young loss.

Damn you!

Ok I watched the first video ("Somebody..."), never heard that song in my life, either the original or the cover. I had to google Gotye, never heard of him either. I truly have my finger on the pulse of current pop music. (but this kind of stuff isn't my thing, so I don't really care. Still sorry the dude died though )

Re: Mike "Beard Guy" Taylor (Walk off the Earth) dead.

Apparently, this band was scheduled to play at the local New Year's Eve concert in Niagara Falls last night (Burton Cummings from The Guess Who headlined) but they obviously cancelled. Didn't know anything about that, man I'm really out of the loop. Also, it turns out they are from Burlington, which is less than an hour away from where I live, what the fuck is wrong with me?

^Nothing wrong with you. Best to avoid today's pop culture. For instance, I hate that I even know who these Kartrashian people are. By all rights, I should be blissfully unaware of them and their ilk, but they infiltrate newspapers, for fuck's sake, even though they are worthless and don't bear mentioning in triple-digit-IQ conversation.
