Group(or solo singer) that has been around for over 50 years-no big hit?

Wayne Newton???

His one song-Daddy Don't You Walk So Fast reached No. 1 with Cash Box and No. 1 in Canada and No. 1 Canada Adult Contemporary but he never reached No. 1 with Billboard(which is the official chart system) with any song. Also the song The Letter reached No. 1 with Cash Box. This all according to Wikipedia-Wayne Newton.

Wasn't "Danke Schoen" a big hit?

I think the Beatles started owning the charts during that time period. The song came out in 1963 and reached No. 13,No. 3 Adult Contemporary.

I remember hearing the song on the radio and him singing it on Ed Sullivan.

Surprisingly the greatest guitar player of all-time,JimiHendrix,never had a top ten hit and the highest one song got was No. 20 with All Along the Watchtower.

Brian Eno, Richard Thompson, and Jonathan Richman seem to fit the bill. I think these are a ton of people in jazz/blues/folk/country music that would qualify as well.

Weird. "Donkey Shane" is a really well-known song, so it's surprising it didn't chart higher.

Interestingly, Led Zeppelin's best known song, "Stairway to Heaven," never charted because they never released it as a single. It frequently makes best of lists, and is the most requested song on radio.

Over 50 years? Jesus, not everyone on this board is 50 or older?

That's kind of a stretch. Why make it so long? How about an act that's been around 20-30 years and you'll probably get more answers.

Status Quo

I just read that their lead guitarist just passed away. He was Rick Parfitt.

According to Wikipedia they began back in 1962 as The Scorpions(not the German group).

They only had one charted US hit-Pictures of Matchstick Men(peaked at No. 12).

They are more famous in their native UK.

They were the opening act for Live Aid.

Type O Negative and Ozzy did a cover of that song years ago. There's also one with Pete's vocals.

Yes, there's a huge amount of artists out there who've been recording and haven't had a big hit.

Assuming it's 50 years since recording the first album, Freddy Cole and Junior Wells are two examples. Livingston Taylor and Eric Bibb are only a few years away.

Well, that song still hit #4 on the Hot 100 and was ranked number 10 on Billboard magazine's Top Hot 100 songs of 1972. If that isn't considered a hit, then I'd imagine quite a few acts won't make the cut.
