Three Dog Night vocalist Cory Wells dead at 74

Dog Night co-founder and vocalist Cory Wells died Tuesday, according to the band's website. He was 74.

"It is with deep sadness and disbelief that I must report the passing of Cory Wells, my beloved band mate for over 45 years," Three Dog Night's Danny Hutton wrote in a press release. "Cory was an incredible singer – a great performer, he could sing anything."

Wells "died unexpectedly" in Dunkirk, N.Y. He had been touring with the band until September 2015 when he developed "severe back pain." No cause of death was given.

"Cory was like a brother in so many ways," said Hutton. "We had been together since 1965 and I am in shock at this sudden loss."

The group is best known for its 1960s and 1970s hits "Joy to the World," ''Mama Told Me (Not to Come)" and "Black and White."

That's sad, I remember listening to Three Dog Night when I was quite a bit younger. I'll always remember him more for their Suitable For Framing and It Ain't Easy albums than their later more popular hits.

I just posted on my Facebook page last night that TDN were coming to the Birchmere in Alexandria Virginia soon playing for two nights and charging nearly $70 a ticket. Not that I was a fan, but kind of shocked they were booked for two nights and charging that much. Was Corey the current lead singer touring with TDN?

Old Fashioned Love Song, One, and Joy to the World are great songs.

Fox News article. Surprised they aren't blaming his death on Obama.

Saw 3 Dog Night way back in 1973. Dating myself. Didn't go to see them so much as the opening act, T Rex.

My dad always loved the group and spoke fondly of seeing them in concert back in the '70s. Seems like the group's stature has receded somewhat in the past couple decades. I remember a TV commercial back in the '80s for their greatest hits CD.
