Elliott Smith Doc - "Heaven Adores You"
I've just finished watching this; after waiting a year to see it. Reading early reviews, checking on updates. This documentary used the Kickstarter method, and was finally completed. The thought of crossing my fingers, hoping it would come to Alabama, never crossed my mind. So I waited for the Blu-ray, which has finally been released.
Seeing Montage of Heck, and Grant Gee's Joy Division as a precursor, I was completely astounded at how personal this documentary got. Mythical legends in music really are few and far between. I'm not just talking about early deaths, but those early exits leave a lot of unanswered questions. Particularly for fans of the music; and these bands have fairly rabid fan bases.
The same can be said for Elliott Smith. I have been a fan of his music since about 2006, when I was 20 years old. His struggles have closely resembled mine, and his articulate, abstract writing has mirrored my thoughts, or at least my interpretations of the pretty much everything. I wont get into details, but I've lived a hard life these past 12 years and one thing that has always stuck with me, was Elliott's music.
The documentary was inspiring. To someone familiar with his catalog, it fills in a lot of gaps that have been left open for many years. To the unknown, I wouldn't recommend it because it doesn't cater to those who don't already know his story.
He was a talented musician. One of the greats. You either love him, or you don't get it. I've never encountered anyone who didn't like it, but it is something you have to fall in love with on your own. Like all great music. The doc focuses on his musical history, and gets the drama over with early. There are a lot of unanswered questions in his story, but his music is what remains, and he left it for us. There is plenty of it to go around. From the unheard of stuff in the film, they could release a few appendices to New Moon.
I'm a little intoxicated right now, and I know I don't post much. But to the (few) Elliott fans on the board. What are your opinions? It's always great hearing his voice again.
oh and....
Either/Or
XO
Elliott Smith
Figure 8
From a Basement on a Hill
Roman Candle
New Moon
Mic City Sons
Cop and Speeder
anything he recorded was golden. this list can change at any given time. I once made a girlfriend a mix Elliott disc, and it ended up being 3 discs.

Re: Elliott Smith Doc - "Heaven Adores You"
I'm also a big Elliott Smith fan.
He blew away all of the other Oscar song nominees at the 1998 Academy Awards. The guy made those audience members sit up in their seats and take notice when he walked out on the stage and performed "Miss Misery." It's a shame that he didn't stand a chance against the Titanic juggernaut and its tune "My Heart Will Go On" with its insipid lyrics.
I'm always hoping for a high-quality DVD/Blu ray to be released of one of his shows instead of the low-quality youtube stuff.
