What type of anime fan are you?

2ch and Sankaku Complex (Warning: NSFW) have popularized the terms Type A and Type B to classify anime fans. Which type are you?

Type A:

A person who simply enjoys “anime.”

Is proud of Japan’s anime.

Evaluates anime based on direction, voice acting, art, etc.

Hates shallow anime with no real content.

Story emphasis >>>>> Moe anime.

A recent example would Higashi no Eden. Fans of anime like Lain or Ghost in the Shell would probably be this kind.
Type B:

A person who simply enjoys “characters.”

Will watch an anime if it includes cute or beautiful characters.

Doesn’t care if story is awful, as long as the characters are of interest.

Evaluates anime based on which seiyuu are in it and what the characters look like.

Loves moe elements. Doesn’t like complex anime.

The otaku the media picks up on are usually this kind.

Doesn’t know that much about anime and so is often criticised as by Type A otaku.

However, they make much better customers than the more discerning Type A otaku.

Recently there has been a huge increase in anime targeted at Type B otaku.

People who like K-ON!, Queen’s Blade, Strike Witches and so on would be in this class.
I'm definitely a Type B. I prefer the light and fluffy shows. I don't care much about the storyline as long as the characters are enjoyable. But I occasionally watch some Type A shows.

Re: What type of anime fan are you?

Apparently Type A.

I tend to avoid moe shows, most slice of life, and just about anything that deals with teenagers in a highschool setting because it's completely overplayed.

I guess when you've watched over 700 entries, and still have about 200 planned you finally start being a bit more picky in what you pick up to watch.

Why does type b make a better customer?

Probably because their lack of taste makes them more prone to buy stuff that type a would pass on as type a seems to critique more and as such finds reasons not to purchase something.

Re: What type of anime fan are you?

Type A.

Which is why I've bought so few new anime series in the last ten years. Type B fans have certainly propped up the market, which is why the anime industry panders to them. I probably don't need more than ten fingers to count the number of anime series I've bought that have come out since 2005 (HAKUOKI: DEMON OF THE FLEETING BLOSSOM, LE CHEVALIER D'EON, NANA, NODAME CANTABILE, EDEN OF THE EAST, THE MELANCHOLY OF HARUHI SUZUMIYA, to name the ones that come to mind). 2005 was probably the last year that produced a large number of series I acquired (BASILISK, SPEED GRAPHER, PARADISE KISS, GLASS MASK, MOBILE SUIT GUNDAM SEED DESTINY, etc.).

But when an old series (1970s and 80s, especially) finally comes out on DVD in the U.S., I snatch it up. Just in the last two years, I've bought GALAXY EXPRESS 999, CAPTAIN HARLOCK, SPACE ADVENTURE COBRA, MAZINGER Z, DEVILMAN, CUTIE HONEY, CAT'S EYE, ROSE OF VERSAILLES, YAWARA!, THE MYSTERIOUS CITIES OF GOLD, etc.

Now I just need time to watch these things!

I would say I watch an equal amount of Type A and Type B stuff. The "slice of life" stuff is my favorite among the latter, although I quickly get annoyed whenever something even begins to take the harem route.

In either case, I'm a bad customer. I stream everything these days, and haven't purchased a series since Big Lots was blowing out stuff like Wolf's Rain and Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam years ago.

I don't think the categories really exist. Some type A fans have a huge dislike for anything that smacks of moe or fan service or anything silly in their anime. They need to lighten up and realize not everyone shares their tastes.

Re: What type of anime fan are you?

I am an "AB mix"

I am proud of Japans anime.

Anime must not be awful.

Evaluates anime based on direction, english voice acting, and must not be crappy artwork.

Enjoys characters, Moe elements
Uguu...

I like watching most Fan Service animes with gorgeous females.

I Hate shallow anime with no real content like Naruto, Dragon Ball, Onepiece, Bleach, Inuyasha, and Gundam.

Some of my top fav animes include Kanon, Clannad, Angel Beats, Crono Crusade, A Certain Scientific Railgun, A Certain Magical Index, Toradora, Kiddy Grade, Chobits, Angelic Layer.

I think "Last Exile" is a masterpiece, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya the Movie and Sword Art Online is also a Masterpiece, if it wasn't for the titans looks "Attack on Titans" would be also.

My favorite characters include

Yurippe from Angel Beats

Neptune, Noire, Vert, Blanc, Nepgear, Uni, IF, I should just say everyone from Hyperdimension Neptunia

Ayu from Kanon

Kyou from Clannad

Type A, I guess.

I can enjoy silly stuff, but anime is at it's best when voice, story and art all combine to make a truly enjoyable experience.

What? Why is fan service not shallow but Shonen/Gundam is?

If all you're saying is that filler for long-running shonen series sucks, than I agree. But to say One Piece as a whole has no content... or saying all of Gundam? Ugh.

Shonen animes with hundreds of episodes is the only animes I don't care for and it fit in the question for type of anime that is shallow with very little content.

for example why I don't like them. I liked the first season of Naruto, after about season three the artwork started to get sloppy then I stopped watching after about 160 episodes. One Piece I don't think i wached more then 40 episodes before I quit.

Re: What type of anime fan are you?

So you don't like Death Note, .hack, Air Gear, Accel World, Claymore, Code Geass, Gurren Lagann, Eureka Seven, Fate/stay night, Fullmetal Alchemist, Log Horizon, Seraph of the End, Pandora Hearts, Rurouni Kenshin, Samurai Champloo, Attack on Titan, Soul Eater, Spiral, Tide-Line Blue, either?

To write off all these, but claim what is basically animated porn isn't shallow is pretty farfetched to believe.

Re: What type of anime fan are you?

I figured with the way Oda designs females these days that chrisc31 would be a fan, but they probably aren't featured enough...

I mean, I get fan service, while I shy away from the kind of fan service you like, I'm certainly more into an anime if it has giant mechs than if it replaced those with tanks. I consider an anime shallow if it only hits those beats and really has no story to back it up (like the only reason it exists is for the character designs); while it's true that a lot of shonen falls into the "infinite tournaments with constant level ups and bad guys become your allies" genre, there is a story to most of them, and something like One Piece in particular kind of bucks the trend in many ways.

Again, if you're watching just the anime, the filler is usually killer, but that's mainly because the series is popular enough to not end and try to bide time while the manga gets ahead.

And while some Gundam is pure fan service, others have a surprising amount of depth for a story of giant robots and espers.

And sometimes simple doesn't necessarily mean shallow either. I enjoy watching Doraemon with my kids. It's certainly not complex and is more character driven, but I wouldn't call it shallow necessarily.

Re: What type of anime fan are you?

Thanks for amending your initial response, chrisc31, like I said before, I can understand a long running shonen series not really being exciting because of all the filler. I personally pretty much read the manga and try to catch the "canon" episodes.

Re: What type of anime fan are you?

I care about the art more than anything. Story comes in second. I'm a bit old school, though. I guess that would make me lean more towards Type A then.

Re: What type of anime fan are you?

In the past 5 years I've started skipping filler episodes myself. Especially in Naruto and Fairy Tail in particular. Luckily One Piece has had almost no filler. Unfortunately at the cost of having almost no filler we end up with shitty pacing as they try to pad out an entire episode with only one chapter to avoid catching up to the manga. -_- I'd personally rather have filler I can skip or have the show go on a hiatus rather than have them do injustice to the canon as they're doing in the case of One Piece. I use to really enjoy the show but Dress Rosa has me wanting to drop it.

Re: What type of anime fan are you?

Part of it is anime padding, but the Dressrosa arc is really, really long in manga form as well. But the fact that the anime made the marineford arc drag on, when it was full of action, is just criminal.

Re: What type of anime fan are you?

Type A for me and would really like to see more with bonus features and commentaries with the original voice actors. I find good bonus features as interesting as the series or movies themselves and always look to see if there are any before I buy. Since they spend so much time in making a good series or movie that they might want to talk about it and give people some insight on what's going on behind the scenes and with making it.

Re: What type of anime fan are you?

Gotta say a mixture of both. Though I do like to watch animes with nice visuals, the story is just as important.
Even if the characters are beautiful as hell, if there's no interesting plot, it gets old real fast for me.

Re: What type of anime fan are you?

I'd classify myself a mixture of both types A & B. Don't mind moe characters at all, but well-crafted mature storytelling is always welcome. My favorite all-time shows are Fate/Zero and Steins;gate, but I watch plenty of fluffy shows filled with cute characters and not much else.

Re: What type of anime fan are you?

Necro bump for the new guy, lol...

I'm definitely Type A, and definitely never type B. I'm an older anime fan, almost 60 now, my two daughters got me hooked in anime after I turned 50. I only go for series that are interesting to adult viewers - seinen, serious drama, romance, adventure, fantasy mystery, political, psychological, and horror. I really hate comedy, chibi, and cutesy moe characters and art styles in anime, and try to avoid high school settings, fanservice and ecchi, RomComs, harems, sports or game based anime, cartoony mecha series, children's anime, pretty much anything silly or "fun." I prefer slow moving plots that make you think and keep you in the dark, rather than explaining everything to you step by step like you have a brain of an imbecile.

Some of my favorite anime are Ghost in the Shell, Garden of Sinners, Requiem for the Phantom, Noir, Ergo Proxy, Gunslinger Girls, Monster, Appleseed, Darker than Black, Blood+, Noein, Jormungand, Black Lagoon, Flag, Witch Hunter Robin, Legend of the Galactic Heroes, Space Battleship Yamato 2199, Now and Then Here and There, Psycho Pass, Ajin, Death Parade, Joker Game, ACCA 13, Twelve Kingdoms, Moribito, Guin Saga, Snow White with the Red Hair, Yona of the Dawn, and Ancient Magus Bride. Most recently, for me Violet Evergarden was an absolute masterpiece, and is my favorite anime of all time now.
