Steve Hoffman forums are the best forums for serious music collectors

I agree Steve Hoffman is full of a lot of old white guys but vinyl collecting is an old white guy thing. I also think there are lots of old white guys on that forum who like a variety of music of different periods. Vinyl is primarily a pre-1990's thing with a slight resurgence in the past decade. I'd rather read about different pressings of Filles De Kilimanjaro than the newest Mondo release or the new My Morning Jacket LP. But then again, I'm an old white guy.

I'd disagree with that assessment, as an old brown guy. Besides you have the vinyl "resurgence" (a blip, really, but in this day and age that counts as a resurgence) that has brought all four quarters into the record collecting hobby.
The SHF crowd is more into the anal "if you don't have THIS pressing from Germany in 1972 on green vinyl" scene. I'm a semi-active SHF participant but my eyes start glossing over when it devolves into that level of banality.
Where it works as a resource is for finding out the latest news and rumors about upcoming releases, releases, where they're sourced from, etc. Sadly the Dinobots seem to be the vocal minority more and more lately -- the "you can't play MP3s on an iPod" crowd

As an old white guy with a pathetically large vinyl collection (who the hell needs two - TWO! - copies of Madman Across the Water?) I am resentful of being stereotyped, but ultimately I find comfort in it.

I don't see anything wrong with discussing different pressings although I take with a grain of salt these supposed obvious differences they claim to hear. I especially like the threads like the behemoth Miles Davis album by album thread where people discuss the actual MUSIC.

I'm much more involved in music discussions than most of the "audiophile" discussions. I think that's the eternal SHF identity dilemma, is it for music fans? Audiophiles? Creepy smelly old white people? Irrational black people? All of the above? The parody site, while admittedly populated by lifeless knobs, can be pretty damn funny sometimes

Do they listen to music on the Hoffman forums anymore ... or do they just visualize it through the sound graphs?
