Vudu Lowers Price on HDX Rentals

Just got an email from Vudu announcing their new lower priced HDX rentals.

Previously, most New Release rentals were $5.99 for HDX. Those prices have dropped to $4.99. It looks like most HDX catalog rentals are now $3.99.

We know you love renting movies with VUDU, so today we have some great news - lower prices on HDX rentals.

HDX rentals are now the same price as HD, which means you can watch MORE movies, in the BEST resolution, for a LOWER price. Best of all, these lower prices are here to stay.

You can start saving immediately on rentals from our extensive library, including the latest hits like The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb, and more.

Wow, I had never looked at Vudu rental pricing before. I had assumed it was closer to the $1 price.

$4.99-$5.99 is pretty standard for New Release HD rentals. All the other VOD companies are in the same range.

I'll still wait for the Redbox. I still think that's a crazy price to be paying for a rental.

Re: Vudu Lowers Price on HDX Rentals

That is awesome news, it seems the streamers are starting to figure out they would make more overall money if they charged less. $5 is about the sweet spot for me. I've noticed TV episodes have gone down to $3 for HDX as well. Seems it used to be $4 not long ago.

Sure Redbox is cheaper, but they don't have much. And even then only the top titles are on Blu Ray. I'd rather pay $5 to rent an HDX version than $1.20 for a standard DVD. And then have to drive back & wait behind a family of yahoos who stand in front of the machine for 20 minutes while I just want to drop off.

Good news. I prefer to rent from Redbox, but sometimes instant gratification wins out of over the 20 minute roundtrip it'd take my to drive to the nearest machine. It is a head scratcher, though, on why streamed on-demand movies are way more expensive than renting an actual disc.

I usually buy codes off of people for $3-5, because I prefer to own the movies I want. But any price reduction is a bonus, in my book.

This is nice to hear, as - in my experience - Vudu has the best quality streaming of any of the apps out there.

I typically only rent from Vudu when I acquire gift cards. Either way, good news.

They may need the revenue stream for $5 new release pricing, but Catalog titles should definitely be significantly cheaper.

Re: Vudu Lowers Price on HDX Rentals

Well, it's a start. I have a 'wish list' of older movies that have HDX transfers on Vudu but never even got a 16x9 DVD release, but been reluctant to rent them for $5. Going down to $4 is a little better but still more than a tape rental was back in the day. I watched hundreds of movies on Vudu when they had the daily 99-cent rental, but they canned that back in December. I can see charging $5 for new releases but some of these older movies I've wondered if ANYBODY has rented them at the prices they've been asking.

Yeah, I can't imagine renting for more than a buck or two when you can own pretty much any film for $3-5.

Sorry, where are we getting $3-$5 movies? Is this for UV codes?

EBay is my guess. A lot of people sell their bluray UV codes.

I'm not sure about ebay. I buy them here or other forums.
