Help needed indentifying movie (Hammer gothic horror film?)
There's a movie I saw on TV as a kid around the mid-seventies which freaked me out and I've always wondered what it was.
I missed the beginning so there's no chance I'll recognize the title. My memory is very fuzzy 40 some years later so hopefully this is an accurate recollection. Looking back, it feels like some kind of Gothic horror movie from Hammer Films.
When I started watching it, I remember a young girl (I'm thinking young teens) in some kind of castle or mansion staring at a portrait of a woman. For some reason she is drawn to it, so she reaches out to touch it - at which point the portrait starts bleeding profusely like she scratched the woman in the painting.
At this point I'm too frightened to change the channel so I just continue to stare transfixed at the screen.
I'm thinking there's some kind of dark family secret that comes to light towards the end that is revealed by an older man to the girl. (And the girl might have supernatural powers of some sort.) They then murder the lady of the home and as he sets fire to the bedroom, they casually walk out while a blazing fire spreads and covers their crime.
Couldn't sleep that night after seeing it.
Does this sound familiar to anyone?

Wow! First guess is right! Now that I watched that trailer I understand why I was terrified. Jeez it still looks creepy. Thanks so much for the help!

Now I'm kind of interested in this movie.
The VHS and DVD are not cheap.
I would buy if Scream or Arrow or whoever released it on blu-ray.

Just watched this not long ago....I bought the DVD for $3. It was a double feature with Murder Mansion which was the film I really wanted. I can't believe how expensive the DVD is now.

Rennervision's post has made it a must-see among Zsa Zsa Gabor fans. (QUEEN OF OUTER SPACE is more my cup of tea.)

I read some comments on IMDB where traumatized people first saw it when they were 7-8 years old like me. And now a whole new generation of young children can watch the full uploaded version on YouTube. (I watched it again last night.) This movie sets the bar for dysfunctional families.
