Romancing the Stone (1984/D: Zemeckis) (S: Douglas, Turner, DeVito, etc)

A romance writer sets off to Colombia to ransom her kidnapped sister, and soon finds herself in the middle of a dangerous adventure.

I asked awhile back what films were ones that were good to see w/ Douglas in them. I'd only seen him Traffic, Haywire, The Game, and a few others. I've always liked him. Seemed like a cool guy in his work.

Anyway... I bought this for cheap during BF. I'll be damned. This a really fun flick. The BD looks good too. It's almost preposterous how much fun this film is. It's really really good.

I can't really say much about the story. It seems somewhat generic but the way it's done makes it so much fun. Just so much fun. That mule they used in that chase was fucking awesome. I bet the stunt guys had a great time w/ that one.

I pretty much fell in love w/ this film immediately once it started w/ Joan's novel writing. It's just so much fun. Supposedly it was the best film Fox had in 1984. I can see why. I'm glad I have it now.

Picked this up at Walmart for $5 some time ago, at the time it was a no-brainer, it had the Special Edition version of both movies on their own discs. Romancing the Stone is much better than Jewel of the Nile, but both are fun movies. Glad I picked it/them up...

The Jewel of the Nile is nowhere near as fun as Romancing. It's almost like they used the movie in order for the cast to get together.

I love Romancing the Stone! Yes, it borrows (sometimes heavily) from other movies, but it works. This is when Kathleen Turner was hot and Douglas and her made a good couple. De Vito just added to the mix.

I always forget about these movies when thinking of Douglas. Like others have said, Romancing is better, but both are an enjoyable watch. Thanks for the reminder!

Great flick! Watched it this year with my wife, who had never seen it.

I've always loved this since seeing it in the theater. Jack's got one of the greatest character-intros I've ever seen.

I remember seeing this in the theater as a kid, going with a friend and his dad.

Still recall how much I enjoyed it, along with my friend's dad complaining about how much sex/violence were in films "these days" on the way home. Kind of funny, since it seems fairly tame in looking back at it now.

Did he have anything to say about drugs in movies? (The pot-humor in this movie went over my young lil' head)

I was actually amazed at some of the violence in this. Interesting to see what had and hadn't solidified yet for the ratings system in that time.

Jack Colton does have a very badass intro. He's a nobody, he's encountered, thinks about it for a bit, then lets loose w/ his shotgun that we didn't know he had. It was a very cool intro for Douglas. Didn't expect to see an intro like that.

Glad you got a chance to finally see this. It's a hard film not to like.
I remember this was released a month or two before the first Indiana Jones sequel/prequel. In retrospect, this was a much better film at harnessing the spirit of Raiders than Temple of Doom was. I'd still take RtS any day over any of the other Indiana Jones movies save RotLA.

Funny you posted this today as I've been thinking about finally getting around to watching my copy of War Of The Roses tonight, which (imo) is an even better match-up with Turner and Douglas and DeVito. Not as much of a crowd pleaser as RtS, as the film has some very cynical and very pitch black humor. If that's your bent though, it's a hell of a ride.

I was looking into that one recently as well. DeVito directed that one. He's very interesting to see in what he chooses to direct. He's one of my favorite actors for some reason. Even as a kid, I've always loved him. He always stood out to me among the casts he was in. He's 70 now. Is there an in depth interview w/ that guy? He's a fucking treasure of film. Wildly unique.

Romancing the Stone has been one of the movies that I've loved since I was a little kid. Michael Douglas was just awesome in it!

War of the Roses is an interesting film, as the trio chose to make this film instead of a third ROMANCING movie, which was to be called "The Crimson Eagle"(if memory serves).

Pick up the signature series of Hoffa on Blu-ray...not only is there a commentary track with DeVito, it also includes a speech he gave to the Teamsters Union.

Always enjoyed this film as a kid. It's been forever since I've seen it. May have to check it out again sometime soon.

Man, it is bizarre seeing Kathleen Turner look like that compared to what she's looked like on film in recent years.

I watched this a couple years ago and didn't like it much. Though to be fair I was expecting something as good as Raiders so maybe I just didn't have the right mind set. Might have to try it again.

You expected this film to be anywhere near as good as one of the best films ever made? That's a tall want.

I get the comparisons to Raiders, but all this was is a tale that Joan Wilder finally got to live out instead of just write about in one of her novels. This is one of my favorite films ever since I saw it when I was very young, and it still is. It's funny, has good action, and the cast has great chemistry. Plus its success paved the way for Back to the Future.

You should check out War of the Roses. It's Douglas/Turner/DeVito together again.

They even do a gag where Douglas is between Turner's legs like in Romancing the Stone, etc.

Re: Romancing the Stone (1984/D: Zemeckis) (S: Douglas, Turner, DeVito, etc)

Obviously there are the cliffhanger similarities which are apparent down to the key art. But the main reason I favorably compared this to Raiders, and why it, for me, soundly trumps the rest of the IJ movies, is because of the chemistry of the leads (and I'm including DeVito in the mix). Harrison Ford in the rest of the films never had the kind of chemistry with a female lead that came close to what he had with Karen Allen in their prime. And you have to be sincerely invested in the characters for any of the cliffhanger stuff to honestly have much impact. Otherwise it's just assumed empathy eliciting rote responses- something something happens, then something something else happens. Big deal.

WotR definitely benefits not only from the chemistry of all the leads, but from the audiences familiarity with them together.
Just watched it last night and will post more thoughts in the Bd sub forum. I just realized last night that it's the perfect antithesis of that other 1989 'through the years' relationship movie- the queasy crowd pleaser When Harry Met Sally.

I remember seeing this in the theater with my then girlfriend/now wife. Great flick that both of us loved. Great chemistry and DeVito stole every scene he was in.

Watch "Body Heat". Besides being an absolutely excellent neo-noir, Kathleen Turner is unbelievably sexy in it. Of course, that was 35 years ago.
