The Last 5 Years (2014, D: LaGravenese), S: Kendrick, Jordan)
The Last 5 Years is a 2014 American musical comedy-drama film starring Anna Kendrick and Jeremy Jordan. Based on Jason Robert Brown's musical of same name, the film is written and directed by Richard LaGravenese. It premiered on September 7, 2014 in the Special Presentations section of the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival.
-Jeremy Jordan as Jamie Wellerstein
-Natalie Knepp as Alise Michaels
-Betsy Wolfe as Cathy's former stripper roommate[8]
-Sherie Rene Scott as a woman in one of Cathy's auditions
-Kurt Deutsch
-Jason Robert Brown as a pianist in one of Cathy's auditions
How had I not heard about this movie? I'm a big fan of composer Jason Robert Brown, and this is one of his few big shows that I've never seen on stage.

I saw a local (live) production of this a few months ago. I liked it a lot - it has a really gorgeous score - but it's also one of those shows I don't think I could watch very often. It's just so darn depressing. (I can't imagine how I'll feel if I ever get to see a production of Brown's Parade.)
Anyways... The trailer looks pretty good, and I've heard mostly good word-of-mouth from those who saw it in Toronto. I'm looking forward to see how well it adapts to the big screen.

I'm a huge fan of the stage version so I'm excited about this.
I'm beyond stoked it's available day and date on VOD. I can see it on release day and it's way cheaper than going out to the theater.

I saw Parade on tour not long after it was on Broadway. What I didn't expect was that Jason F'ing Brown was conducting in the pit. Awesome! A few years later, he randomly appeared as a guest conductor for a symphony pops concert I was attending so I went backstage and chatted with him. The backstage person thought I was trying to bug the guest artist and was surprised I was asking about the conductor. JRB was in LA working on 13 at the time and flew up to cover someone as a favor. I've seen local high school productions of 13 and Songs for a New World (both well done, but obviously not at a professional level).
Agree, but if it plays around here, I might go anyway to support the project.

Recently she was in Drinking Buddies, Rapture-Palooza, The Voices, Life After Beth, Happy Christmas, and The Last Five Years. I think all of those were straight-to-VOD.

Looks like Drinking Buddies and Happy Christmas were by the same director so maybe she likes him or was doing a favor. Her part in Life After Beth was pretty small so that's probably an easy thing to appear in and move on.

I guess this won't be hitting Seattle any time soon.

After this movie came out on digital the same day it was in limited theatrical release (back in February), the BD is $7.99 on Amazon one day after release. I already bought it on digital, but why not for another eight bucks.
