Jory, in all honesty...not much of an impact, it is not the name that is keeping it from being a hit, it is The Fault In Our Stars being such an unexpected box-office beast (folks thought the film would be a hit....but damn, a possible 45-50m weekend for this low budget film is the mark of a film that is an insane over performer). A shame, because it sounds like a good science fiction film, but at least this Sunday EOT will get my dad and i's hard earned money.

I said this before but Edge of Tomorrow looks almost exactly like Oblivion even though I know it's not the same plot. Averager moviegoers prob think the same thing too.

$30m for Edge of Tomorrow sounds about right. Great reviews didn't matter since the trailers and commercials didn't come across as anything special. And there has been a lot of buzz about The Fault In Our Stars. No big surprise.

Not too surprising, seemed like most estimates and predictions were in that range for Edge. It should do better overseas. I'm surprised at Fault; I only saw one trailer for it and it looked pretty typical and sappy, although I hear its decent. Shailene seems like the new "it" girl.

I'm not "average" either, but I can see where the confusion lies. This marketing sold this as Tom Cruise in an action-heavy Groundhog Day, but that hook isn't enough to draw in mass audiences. The alien threat looks like a jumbled mess of dreadlocks on wheels, which is almost exactly how they presented the "aliens" of Oblivion. Edge did very little to set up a threat beyond "world in peril, aliens wiping us out", a conceit that has been beaten to death.

Cruise's films usually don't have gigantic openings. Minority Report only opened to $35 mil when it was released. EOT might be the rare film today that can hang around the top 10 for multiple weeks instead of dropping off a cliff after a month like most do. There's not much action competition until Transformers shows up at the end of the month.

22 Jump Street was tracking around a $55 million opening. That probably has a great shot at being the $200 mil comedy this year.
I think WB would be happy if Edge ended up with about $115-$125 mil. Cruise still has strong star power overseas. It'll have to have solid foreign numbers for them to at least break even. The production budget was $178 mil, so tack on $50 mil at least for advertising.

The people I talked to unfamiliar with what Edge of Tomorrow is actually about just interpreted it as another Oblivion. I don't know if it was possible to really market it any differently but the average person probably just chalked it up as a Sci-Fi video game inspired shooter movie. The "Groundhog Day" aspect was lost on me first, too, honestly -- it wasn't until I read more about the movie that I realized what it was about.
I hope it finds life on video here. Not there there was going to be a sequel anyway, but it really was a great movie.

They really seemed to have trouble marketing and advertising the groundhog day aspect of the movie. I think that would have been a more intriguing sell for audiences.

I think you may mean "selling" the Groundhog Day aspect, because the marketing and advertising was pretty simple to get.

Yup. I've seen a lot of spots and while some try and convey that aspect, a lot of them don't and just show a generic sci-fi action movie.

I read that WB spent $100M on marketing but it sure doesn't seem like it worked. I don't think the concept is that hard of a sell, it's just that they didn't know how to sell it.

They even have a stupid hashtag for it. #livedierepeat
Then again, the younger folks probably never seen Groundhog Day, so that may have something to do with it.

Live. Die. Repeat. doesn't say anything other than the character has the ability to re-generate. That doesn't tell me the Groundhog Day aspect or the fact that the movie is a hell of a lot funnier than any trailer I've seen.

I don't know. I always got the "Groundhog Day" twist when I saw the trailers fairly early on. Maybe I was reading into it too much at the time.

That's all I got from the trailers. That wasn't much to intrigue me. I think it getting good reviews and IMAX exclusivity (until Transformers 4, correct?) will help in weeks to come.

Oblivion $89 million domestic, $197 million overseas = $286 million
Jack Reacher $80 million domestic, $138 million overseas = $218 million
Mission Impossible Ghost Protocol $209 million domestic, $485 million overseas = $694 million
Knight & Day $76 million domestic, $185 million overseas = $261 million

Another sci-fi movie has a so-so opening. Nothing new here.
Sci-fi film gets me more excited than any other genre. Yet, the populist opinion is that they look uninteresting.
I think it looks awesome and will probably watch it tomorrow.
