My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 (2016, D: Kirk Jones) S: Nia Vardalos
Gold Circle and HBO Films have begun developing a sequel along with Playtone Productions to the box office hit “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” with stars Nia Vardalos and John Corbett set to return.
Vardalos will write and star, with Rita Wilson, Playtone’s Tom Hanks, and Gary Goetzman producing. Paul Brooks, Scott Niemeyer, Norm Waitt, Steven Shareshian and Vardalos exec produce.
The story follows the lovably loud Portokalos family who return after a family secret is revealed and a bigger, fatter wedding brings the big fat Greek family back together again.
“Now that I’m experiencing motherhood, I’m ready to write the next chapter of my family story,” said Vardalos. “Of course, a few jaded folks in the press corps will claim I ran out of money or just want to kiss John Corbett again. One of these things is true.”
Vardalos is currently in development on “Leftovers” for Paramount and is also on a book tour for her New York Times bestseller “Instant Mom.”
Gold Circle and Playtone are repped by CAA. Vardalos is represented by Resolution, Untitled Entertainment and attorneys Jon Moonves and Tom Greenberg. Corbett is represented by Gersh and Steve Lovett.

So she tried to continue the story as a TV show and it bombed. She reunited with John Corbett in I Hate Valentine's Day and that was a flop. I know the original made a ton of cash but are people really clamoring for a follow up?

If Rita wants it made, it gets made.

She hasn't had a hit since MBFGW. She does well playing an Attorney on L&O:SVU.

I really like the original, so I have my fingers crossed a sequel will be just as good...altho many times they are not.

I can't really see many people outside of the Greek community clamoring for a sequel. With that said, I'll be there opening night.

Universal has slotted My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 for a March 25 release. The sequel to the smash 2002 indie romantic comedy from writer-star Nia Vardalos will face off against Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice, Warner Bros’ anticipated sequel to Man Of Steel starring Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill. Right now it’s just those two pics on that date.
Kirk Jones directs Greek Wedding‘s next chapter. Rita Wilson and Playtone partners Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman will be back to produce. Paul Brooks and Steven Shareshian return to executive produce alongside Vardalos and Scott Niemeyer. Universal Pictures will distribute domestically and in select international territories.

Never cared to see the first one. I'm guess I didn't miss anything? Sounded overrated from the critics. Haven't actually met anyone that has seen it though.

Been a long time since I've seen the first one, but I remember it being enjoyable for what it was.

I haven't seen it for a while but seem to remember it was okay for what it was. It wasn't particularly great or anything though really and I don't see why a sequel is needed after all this time.

Wow...so they jump ahead 18 years. But...wait the movie is 15 years old? Fuck, that's not so weird after all. Well it is weird how long ago that was.
So the reason for the wedding is the "not officially married" shit? Were they going through 1950's sitcoms for tips?

I think the daughter is getting married too. I dunno. I didn't really pay attention to it. Just noticed it on YouTube and decided to post it.

That movie had one of the most impressive box office runs I've ever seen, grossing $241m (domestic), but it never grossed more than $11.1m on any given weekend, and was never #1, but ran for 52 weeks in theaters and more or less continually gained or kept business for its first 22 weeks (it peaked at $11.1m on its 20th weekend), then slowly decreased for the remaining 30 weeks.
Word of mouth success if there ever was one.

It also did extremely well with DVD sales.
I thought the original was garbage; practically a terrible sitcom on the big screen. This just looks like more of the same.

I liked the movie, but I honesty can't remember much about it other than Windex being used as a funny running gag.
