Wolverine MUTOlates Godzilla and Adam Sandler: Box Office 5/23-5/25

Box Office.com:

1 X-Men: Days of Future Past $93,000,000 -- 3,996 -- $23,273 $93,000,000 1 Fox
2 Godzilla (2014) $32,000,000 -66% 3,952 0 $8,097 $149,348,367 2 Warner Bros.
3 Neighbors (2014) $14,000,000 -44% 3,266 -45 $4,287 $113,679,865 3 Universal
4 Blended $13,700,000 -- 3,555 -- $3,854 $13,700,000 1 Warner Bros.
5 The Amazing Spider-Man 2 $7,600,000 -55% 3,160 -831 $2,405 $184,701,192 4 Sony / Columbia
6 Million Dollar Arm $6,800,000 -35% 3,019 0 $2,252 $20,334,805 2 Disney
7 The Other Woman (2014) $3,600,000 -43% 2,154 -900 $1,671 $77,698,422 5 Fox
8 Rio 2 $2,300,000 -39% 1,701 -670 $1,352 $121,398,040 7 Fox
9 Heaven is for Real $1,950,000 -55% 1,720 -1173 $1,134 $85,750,078 6 Sony / TriStar
10 Captain America: The Winter Soldier $1,700,000 -54% 1,373 -898 $1,238 $253,540,998 8 Disney
That massive 66% drop for Godzilla probably stings just a bit at the WB and Legendary Pictures offices. I think the fans have spoken. We love Godzilla, we just want more than 11 minutes of screen time for the sequel. We can forget a $250 mil US take now, but it will still probably be able to get to $210 mil. I hope they get another director for part 2.

And I'm always happy that an Adam Sandler shitfest under performs.

is that 3 or 4-day totals. either way, i thought X-Men would have been higher slightly at least...

3-day estimates. They are projecting $112.5 mil 4-day for Wolverine: Days of Future Past, and $40 mil flat for big G.

Seems about right, the X-Men franchise has never really done gigantic numbers compared to some of the other comic book movies out there so that's really good.

I think Godzilla would have held better if it didn't have to compete with X-Men on the 2nd week already.

Godzilla would have done better if X-Men hadn't opened since that's cannibalizing a good chunk of the same audience, but G would've had a steep drop no matter what. WOM has been mixed, though most seem to like it, but it hasn't been strong enough to keep those numbers high. Honestly, I'll be happy just to see it cross $200mm. Legendary must have gotten the memo that people want more of G in the next one.

Especially around this forum. Godzilla's still the hot topic.

The lack of actual Godzilla on screen was likely a budgetary decision. No one had any real idea on the reception to yet another Hollywood remake of Godzilla. It was a way to hedge their bets if audiences simply stayed away.

Not exactly. Edwards said he wanted to limit his appearance to little bits here and there before culminating in a big third act because otherwise audiences would have had their wad shot too early. A $160mm budget could've bought more screen time if they wanted it.

That is pr, you don't go around in public saying we altered the storyline because we had a limited budget from the studio. VFX costs both time and money. The real story is that Godzilla's success was no sure thing.

I would think that the numbers for Godzilla are still way beyond expectations despite the huge drop. If it can cross the 200 million mark, that would be a huge success.

More screen time maybe, but probably still in the dead of night with less lighting.

I mentioned in my comments about the movie that a little more G would have been nice. But, just like with original G, the editing makes it feel like he's on screen longer. It is what it is. We'll see what happens with G2.

The 66% drop isn't great, but remember that the movie opened much higher than the initial projections, and WB has already greenlit a sequel, so I'm not going to cry for big G at this point.

If Edwards returns, it'll probably be 2018 when we get a follow-up. That certainly sucks. G should play better overseas. I'm sure it can at least take in $400 mil outside the US. That would give it over $600 mil worldwide once it's finished playing.

I had a really crappy week, but a Adam Sandler film bombing has turned my frown upside down.

Big movies almost always play bigger overseas. Cap2 did $200 million more overseas. Also that much for Gravity. ASM2 has done $640 million total and $461 million of that was overseas.

Surprised X-Men isn't drawing more given the positive reviews.

There's only been 1.5 of his movies I've enjoyed so I agree with both of you.

Positive or not, the 7th film in a waning series isn't going to bring in that many new fans. I'd say it's doing pretty damn good, all things considered.

Yeah, didn't First Class and The Wolverine both open in the 50 million range?
