In A Valley Of Violence (D: Ti West) S: Travolta, Hawke, T. Farmiga
EXCLUSIVE: Taissa Farmiga is getting Violent with The Sacrament director Ti West. She’s joined the cast of the filmmaker’s 1890′s-set Western In A Valley Of Violence, led by Ethan Hawke and John Travolta. Story follows Paul (Hawke), a drifter with nothing to lose who seeks revenge on the thugs who killed his best friend. Farmiga will play a young woman who runs the town’s hotel with her older sister and helps Paul in his quest for vengeance. Blumhouse’s Jason Blum is producing alongside West’s longtime producer Peter Phok and Sacrament producer Jacob Jaffke.
West (House of the Devil, The Innkeepers) world-premiered his latest film The Sacrament in Venice and opens the Jonestown-esque cult thriller on June 6 via Magnolia Pictures. He’s moving fast on Valley, which he wrote and is directing with filming set to begin late next month in New Mexico. Nineteen-year-old Farmiga has had a solid run since making her screen debut in sister Vera’s 2011 directorial debut Higher Ground, followed with a turn in Sofia Coppola’s Bling Ring and indies At Middleton, Anna, and Jamesy Boy. She drew acclaim for her breakout role as Violet Harmon on the first season of FX’s American Horror Story, and returned as a series regular for the show’s third season, American Horror Story: Coven. Farmiga recently filmed Warren Beatty’s untitled next feature and is currently shooting Sony’s meta horror-comedy The Final Girls with Malin Ackerman. She’s repped by ICM Partners, Authentic Talent and Literary Management and Peikoff Mahan.

I hope this is a good Travolta bit. Not the bad Travolta.
But, yeah. Ti West is movin on up. *insert Jeffersons theme*

Should be interesting to see Ti West do a non-horror film. I've liked his output thus far so I'll check it out.

Karen Gillan has joined the cast, according to Deadline.
http://www.deadline.com/2014/05/kare...us-doctor-who/
After leading April’s horror hit Oculus, Scottish actress Karen Gillan has been tapped for another Blumhouse Productions genre feature. The Doctor Who thesp is joining Ethan Hawke, John Travolta, and newly-announced Taissa Farmiga in writer-director Ti West‘s revenge Western In A Valley Of Violence, which is ramping up ahead of a late June shoot. She’s the second repeat Blumhouse actor to fill out the cast of Valley, as Hawke starred in microbudget hits Sinister and The Purge for producer Jason Blum’s shingle. Gillan will play Ellen, the older sister to Farmiga’s character. Together they run a hotel in the town where Hawke’s drifter seeks vengeance for the death of his best friend.

First (?) review from IndieWire... not great.

Horror maestro Ti West pairs Ethan Hawke with an adorable canine sidekick, but he can't teach an old genre new tricks.
In other words, the first oater from slow-burn horror maestro Ti West (“The Innkeepers”) isn’t exactly “The Searchers.” If anything, this bare-bones throwback is such a straight shooter that it makes the hyper-linear “High Noon” feel like “The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance.” For much of this handsomely-lensed but palpably unambitious film, it feels as though West was so happy to be playing with classic Western tropes that he never bothered adding anything to them. Audiences who are just looking for a bone to chew on might have fun gnawing at this, but others will wonder where all the meat has gone.

And the review I linked is considered a "fresh" review on RT, which in its full context, I guess is true. They're not suggesting to avoid it or anything. Seems like a few other reviewers have the same sentiment.
Also, RT is dumb.
I'm still going to see this, without hesitation.

Looks way better than that Magnificent Seven crap which Hawke is also in. Really liked The House of the Devil & The Sacrament. Need to check this out.

I'm interested. Looks really quirky, though. That can hurt or help. Here's hoping it helps.

Just got out of a screening of this. I thought it was fucking awful. Bad acting, script, score. You name it. It was stupid western cliche after stupid western cliche, both in terms of characters, dialogue and plot. Even the set and set decoration managed to be dull. It added nothing new to the genre and didn't stand up on its own as a classic western movie. I read a review that said it stands shoulder to shoulder with Tarantino's westerns. Even though I didn't like Django that much, I found even THAT comparison to be laughable. Ti West was in attendance and introduced the film and did a q&a after, but I skipped out as soon as the credits rolled. I don't know if the audience liked the movie or not, but I didn't want to wait and find out.

Out today in a limited number of theatres (literally ONE in Houston... 50 miles away from me...)
But it's also on all the VOD services. So it looks like I'll be watching this on Vudu.

Hard to determine if this will be good or not from that trailer. Looks more like a riff on Spaghetti westerns rather than a classic Hollywood oater. Curious to see how formulaic this ends up being.

damn fine little western. damn fine. very no frills, simple and straightforward. Travolta was actually decent and showed what he used to be. very enjoyable. don't let the trailer fool you. there really is no comedy or slapstick, like i had saw. barebones and owns it every minute. no need to revisit, but an entertaining watch.

Eh, I thought this was average at best. Disappointed, considering my expectations. I did not like West's script, he tried Tarantino-esque dialogue and failed miserably. It wasn't funny, witty or clever, it was just tedious to listen to. As a fan of spaghetti westerns though, I appreciate the homages to that genre...the old school opening credits and the score. Ethan Hawke's Paul talking in a rough, gravelly voice.
West's "House of the Devil" is a much better homage to 70's horror films than "In A Valley of Violence" is to 60's westerns.
For comparison's sake, I liked the other recent small budget western "Slow West" with Fassbender much better.
Grade: C+

Just watched this and it was ok. It starts of really strong but then they throw a fucking John Wick angle at it - it just seemed like it's too soon for John Wick homages. Travolta was cool. It's definitely worth a rental and I'd buy it if the BD was under $10.

Those were my thoughts as well.
