Underworld: Blood Wars (2017, D: Foerster) S: Beckinsale

With the introduction of Selene (Kate Beckinsale) and Michael Corvin’s (Scott Speedman) hybrid daughter, Eve (India Eisley), in the 2012 Underworld: Awakening, Screen Gems passed the torch to another star in hopes of continuing the franchise.

After a decade-long battle between vampires and werewolves, like it or not, the Underworld franchise is legit. After four successful films, I’m told by my studio Intel that Screen Gems is actively developing the fifth, currently titled Underworld: Next Generation.

While the title could change by the time they go into production, right now they’re seeking a writer and director for the fifth film, although Len Wiseman remains producer. It’s also unclear what direction they will be going as Beckinsale is not attached yet, officially. Hence the title, Next Generation, it’s implied that the new film will follow Eve as the film’s protagonist.

Again, since a director and writer have yet to be assigned, things could change. But in the early stages of development, this is where the studio hopes to take the franchise come 2015.

Re: Underworld: Next Generation in development

This franchise is nothing without Kate Beckinsale. Hell, the only reason the third movie was watchable was because they put Michael Sheen in the lead and gave loads more screentime to Bill Nighy.

Also, the character of the daughter in the last movie absolutely sucked (no pun intended).

I'd like to see a follow up to the third movie or even a prequel to when Viktor was first turned by Markus. That's the only way I'd watch a non-Beckinsale Underworld movie.

Sometimes you get a really interesting movie that tries something new and it's well done and successful. Because of that, the studio turns it into a franchise and milks it to the last drop. Then you get Underworld, which rode the Matrix's butt harder than Keanu Reeve's last endoscopy.

I didn't know this had a big enough following to be this many installments in, to be honest.

The first three were not particularly original, but they were fun. The fourth was a shitty Resident Evil rip-off. I have no interest in any more sequels.

Yeah, the first 3 are stupid fun, but the fourth one killed the franchise for me. This new generation bullshit reeks of executives saying that they can capitalize on the whole YA fiction into films wave currently underway. I do hope that they watch Vampire Academy...

Tossers.

Re: Underworld: Next Generation in development

I found these movies tedious and uninvolving. Poorly written with mediocre direction. Painful to sit though. Just not my cup of tea. My girl likes this crap, so I suffered through these with one eye open. A bit surprised at some of the acting talent (Sheen, Jacobi, Nighy, Dance etc ) slumming in this series. Then again a paycheck is a paycheck.

Beckinsale although a dreadful actress, is obviously easy on the eyes, so there's that i guess..

Re: Underworld: Next Generation in development

I never had any fun while watching the first movie, it was a chore to sit through. I know it has its fans though. About halfway through the movie I leaned to my friend and said "oh! They're vampires!" to him and he was pissed off that I dare interrupt the greatness that was Underworld.

Re: Underworld: Next Generation in development

Lakeshore Entertainment is moving forward with a reboot of the vampire action franchise, hiring Cory Goodman to write the script.

Lakeshore's Tom Rosenberg and Gary Lucchesi are producing.

The first Underworld film, directed by Len Wiseman and starring Kate Beckinsale, was released in 2003. Playing the strong vampire Selena made Beckinsale into a bankable action star, and three films followed in 2006 (Underworld: Evolution), 2009 (prequel Underworld: Rise of the Lycans) and 2012 (Underworld: Awakening).

Underworld: Awakening, the 3D film that saw Beckinsale reprise her role as Selene, was the top earner in the franchise, taking in $160 million worldwide. The vampires versus werewolves franchise has grossed $458.2 million worldwide.

Goodman wrote the script for the 2011 film Priest, starring Paul Bettany. He also penned the script for the upcoming Summit film The Last Witch Hunter starring Vin Diesel, which is currently in pre-production. He's repped by WME, Aperture Entertainment and Hansen, Jacobson.

They should reboot it with Kate Beckinsale in the lead. Would love to see the confusion that would entail.

Huge mistake replacing Beckinsale. She isn't exactly the most compelling actress on screen, but in my dreams she could compel me to eat a mile of her shit just to see where it came from. God almighty, those tight bodysuits she wore...

Re: Underworld: Next Generation in development

Yeah, Beckinsale is this franchise. The only way to replace her is if there is no Selene (or any "replacement" character) and you just do a period film series with talent like Bill Nighy and Michael Sheen (though I'm sure neither will return) and just go for some fun medieval horror violence. Basically what they did with the third movie, only make it more like the prologue of the second movie.

Oh, I wouldn't put it past Nighy to return in w/e form. Like Morgan Freeman or Michael Cain, he doesn't seem to be too picky...
