THE ROVER (2013) (dir. David Michôd) (Guy Pearce, Robert Pattinson, Scoot McNairy)

The Australian desert in a dangerous and damaged near future. Eric has left everything, everyone and every semblance of human kindness behind him. And then he has his last possession stolen by a gang of dangerous criminals. Eric sets off on a ruthless mission to track them down, forced along the way to enlist the help of Rey, the naïve and injured junior member of the gang, who was left behind in the bloody chaos of the gang’s most recent robbery.

I'll see it for Guy Pearce alone.

Could be really good, or really boring.

After Animal Kingdom, I will see mostly anything Michôd will do. This is one of my most anticipated films of the year.

I think AK was way overhyped. I liked it well and all but the hype was a lot bigger than what I felt the film had. Also... Could have been condensed a bit more. Otherwise I dug the film and loved the cast.

I want to see this as I thought Animal Kingdom was fantastic. Don't know when I will get around to it, though.

Watched this last night as a rental, and I had mixed reactions. On one hand, it was very slow and boring, and some points nonsensical (why did the thieves abandon the magically undamaged truck?). On the other, it was thought-provoking, well-shot and the acting was convincing.

Don't expect a "Road Warrior" experience from this film.

Spoiler:
I can chuckle at the title now after watching the ending.

If you like Pearce, you might enjoy a lesser-known movie he starred in called [I]Ravenous[/b].

Excellent film. Goes well on my shelf right next to The Road.

Spoiler:
I also got a laugh out of the title after finishing the film.

Just finished this. Really liked it. Some simple motivation for our hero but it made sense in the end.

Pearce was great as usual. Pattinson was great as well.

It's like $6.96 at amazon for the BD now. I ordered it. Really excited for this one. I dig Pearce. Very underused talent.

That's about right. It's a really good movie but I don't know how much replay value it has.

Yes, that's a great price. I ordered a copy. I had redboxed the dvd, so my end cost is a bit higher.

Goddamn. Watching the BD I got for BF now. This is a very fucking interesting film. WTF is it about that car that Pearce's character cares about so much? I just reached the point where Pattinson handles the 3 soldiers. This film is fucking good so far.

Also... I've never seen a gun buy go down like that. Specifically w/ one character in that bit. Didn't know if it was brutal because of it or not. lol.

EDIT:
Damn. That's actually a damn good reason to want the car back. Really fucking good movie. Tells a lot about a man's best friend and how much he meant to him. Obsessive, gritty, and tense. I liked this a lot more than Animal Kingdom, which I thought could have been condensed a bit.

Pearce, man. Motherfucker is the man.

Re: THE ROVER (2013) (dir. David Michôd) (Guy Pearce, Robert Pattinson, Scoot McNairy

Recently saw The Rover for the first time. Amazing post apocalyptic (PA) film, and very minimalist. I liked the fact that there were no real "bad guys" in the movie, just anti-heroes. The desolate Australian landscape may as well have been another character here. This was not a Mad Max action film, nor was it trying to be.

Two scenes in particular took me by surprise, which isn't easy to do these days - since films have become so predictable:

- When the Guy Pearce character
Spoiler:
went to buy a gun from the little man, and then abruptly killed the man quite suddenly with the loaded gun he was trying to purchase (when it was clear that he didn't have enough money to buy the weapon). The utter stupidity of the little man in trying to sell loaded guns to strangers was hilarious - in a very dark humor kind of way.

- When it was revealed -
Spoiler:
at the very end - that the GP character was trying to get his car back (and killed numerous people to achieve this) primarily because his dog's body was in the trunk & he wanted to bury this properly. Not something you would have expected.

RP gave an amazing performance as the mentally disabled character - fantastic acting here. His role in this film - along with the more recent Good Time (2017) - have been very impressive.

A great “oh now I get the movie’s title!” moment.
