Rocky the Musical debuting on Broadway in 2014

Could this be a huge hit or a colossal failure?

Just hope they don't make another Rocky movie since Rocky Balboa was a fitting end to the saga.

It's been a knockout in Germany. Now Sylvester Stallone hopes a musical based on his beloved boxing film "Rocky" will also be a hit on Broadway.

Producers said Sunday they plan to get "Rocky" up and punching at the Winter Garden by February following a successful debut in Hamburg last fall.

Based on the Oscar-winning 1976 film, the musical features a score by "Ragtime" veterans Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens, and a story by Thomas Meehan, who wrote "The Producers" and "Hairspray."

Originally written in English but translated into German for its world premiere and billed as "Rocky: Das Musical," the show is produced by Stallone and Stage Entertainment USA.

The only film in the series I recognize is the original John G. Alvidsen film, which I find truly brilliant.
Everything else is just dross. I'm certainly not interested in this particular musical.

What if Hugh Jackman and Patrick Dempsey had a love child?

The backing music sounds like Blue Man Group. Except for the end obviously.

I honestly think Danzig could have looked the part and sang the song better.

I'm disappointed Rocky's robe doesn't have an advert for Shamrock Meats on the back.

LOL - which I saw last night - and what an ending does Blue Man Group deliver!

never saw the original Rocky - nor am I rushing out to see this musical

from Variety's review of the show:

In Act Two, Timbers lets the techno-wizards off the leash to play on Christopher Barreca’s industrial-scaled set, which turns into an elaborate configuration of elevated catwalks and bridges and trusses and miscellaneous metal parts that could crush steel beams in their jaws. But the real stunner are the video projections by Dan Scully and Pablo N. Molina: a moving panorama of black-and-white city scenes that dwarf the lonely figure of Rocky as he runs his heart out on his pre-dawn training sessions.

You’d think that nothing could top that visual — until Hoggett sends out a dozen anonymous runners in grey sweatsuits to pound those streets alongside our hero. It’s a breathtaking sequence that ends, of course, with Rocky scaling the steps of the Philadelphia Art Museum and doing his little victory dance.

By the time the big fight comes around, the audience is all warmed up — especially those patrons sitting in the first dozen or so rows of the orchestra who are escorted from their seats and trundled up to the stage and onto bleacher seats to play their collective role as the fight crowd. The fight itself is a brilliant piece of staging, all the more so because it’s also seen in closeup detail on the giant video screens of the Jumbotron. But even before the fight begins, the transformation of the theater into the auditorium setting of a boxing match is itself a spectacular effect, and one better seen than described.

I LOVE the Rocky Franchise (and 4 is my favorite ).

This sounded like a horrible idea from the beginning. The video did nothing for me.

No love for Rocky Balboa? It's the best of the sequels by a country mile.

That's my exact order of preference, too. Let's be friends! My favorite line from Rocky Balboa is "fighters fight!"

Re: Rocky the Musical debuting on Broadway in 2014

Rocky IV is in the top 3 of Rocky movies.

The Broadway musical "Rocky" is hanging up its gloves after being battered at the box office.

Producers said Tuesday that the show will play its final performance at the Winter Garden Theatre on Aug. 17, after playing 28 previews and 188 regular performances.

Based on the Oscar-winning 1976 film by Sylvester Stallone, the musical features a score by "Ragtime" veterans Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens, and a story by Thomas Meehan, who wrote "Hairspray." Alex Timbers directed.

The musical never took off after mixed to poor reviews, despite a spectacular final few minutes when the boxing ring is lowered onto the first few rows. It broke the $1 million-mark only once and lately was making only half its $1,263,688 potential.

The show earned four Tony Award nominations but took home only a scenic design award.
