If you ever wondered why Hollywood never tapped the rich tapestry of video games to make animated films, you're not alone. And now you won't have to wait long: The vibrant world of Insomniac's Ratchet and Clank is set to come to the silver screen in early 2015. The movie's being made by Rainmaker Entertainment, the animation studio behind Escape From Planet Earth, and Blockade Entertainment. Primary production is already underway on the film, which will feature voice cast members from the game franchise, including James A. Taylor as Ratchet, David Kaye as Clank and Jim Ward as Qwark.

According to the press release, "Ratchet and Clank tells the story of two unlikely heroes as they struggle to stop a vile alien named Chairman Drek from destroying every planet in the Solana Galaxy. Ratchet is the last of his kind – a foolhardy 'lombax' who has grown up alone on a backwater planet with no family of his own. Clank is a pint-sized robot with more brains than brawn. When the two stumble upon a dangerous weapon capable of destroying entire planets, they must join forces with a team of colorful heroes called The Galactic Rangers in order to save the galaxy. Along the way they’ll learn about heroism, friendship, and the importance of discovering one’s own identity. "

Screenwriter and Senior Writer for Insomniac Games, TJ Fixman, will handle the script. The movie will be directed by Jericca Cleland and produced by Blockade’s CEO Brad Foxhoven and VP of Development David Wohl, with Rainmaker President Michael Hefferon serving as Executive Producer and Rainmaker’s Kim Dent Wilder and Kylie Ellis serving as Supervising Producer and Producer, respectively.

“We’ve always thought Ratchet and Clank would be a fantastic all-ages movie and are thrilled our intergalactic heroes will finally get their chance to shine on the big screen,” said Ted Price, founder and CEO of Insomniac Games. “Insomniac is especially honored to play a hands-on role with the film’s production, including the screenplay, consulting on character development and animation, and adding support to the film's marketing.”

Sweet! I'll make it a quadruple feature with Uncharted, Halo and Bioshock when it comes out.

I thought it was an interesting message in the trailer considering the state of the VFX industry and how animators are seen.

Cool. These games are a lot of fun, and Qwark rocks.

I wonder how this will work out as a narrative. Will it be a movie for their world? Is it a story that is not associated with the game's universe? They love to break the 4th wall so the former would make sense.

Maybe it's a story actually set in the originated universe and this is just one more story for them.

I'm guessing it'll be just like Tools of Destruction and A Crack In Time. The narrative will be straightforward but every so often there will be throwaway comments that acknowledge it's a movie.

And the Mass Effect movie. Although this stands a far better chance than any of those.

I've never played the games, but I know they have a lot of fans. I'll wait for reviews.

re: Ratchet & Clank: The Movie (2016) - News, Cast, Etc.

I actually just got in a R&C mood last month. Had bought the HD Collection and all 3 PS3 games last year. Beat the HD collection last month, beat Tools of Destruction last month as well, Crack in Time 2 weeks ago, and finished Nexus like 3 days ago. Just going after trophies now. Damn I love this franchise. Slightly displeased in the length of the game but it was made to be short. A Crack in Time was good but I didn't jive w/ the solo adventures. Felt wrong not having the two together.

I'm sad that the new game coming out will be a reboot more in line w/ the film's origins. I really liked seeing these two guys continue on.

Confirmed on the official PlayStation blog -- the movie's been delayed to April 29th, 2016, and the PS4 game is slated for a Spring 2016 release.

Stallone, Goodman, Dawson, and Giamatti are in this too?

Never heard of Bella Thorne.

I like were they went with certain things w/ the property in the trailer but that trailer has generic all over it too. I really hate how studios market their animated films at times.

Release week bump!

The game has probably spoiled the movie for me now with a LOT of cutscenes from the film. Still I'm going Friday or Saturday with my son. Looks like it's a limited release only in a few theaters in town and only showing twice a day on some screens.

Ok. Somehow I have seen damn near nothing of marketing for this movie. Is it just where I run or wtf is Sony doing w/ it?

It's a Gramercy picture, not a Sony one.

But yeah, they're just dumping it.

I've seen lots of commercials on Cartoon Network. I can't say that it looked especially appealing in those spots though and I don't expect it to do well.

I've seen a ton of ads for this, but then I mostly watch Adult Swim at night.

The ads have been terribly generic though.

Maybe they're expecting/hoping the core fans will show up? Considering how old the series is there's a lot of fans that have kids of their own now and will take them as well.

I hope it's near me this weekend as I want to see it.
