Her -- D: Spike Jonze S: Phoenix -- 2013
Director: Spike Jonze
Writer: Spike Jonze
Cast:
Joaquin Phoenix
Olivia Wilde
Amy Adams
Rooney Mara
Plot: A lonely writer develops an unlikely relationship with his newly-purchased operating system that's designed to meet his every need. (Queue the "S1m0ne" jokes)
--------
Where the Wild Things Are was garbage, but I loved Adaptation and Being John Malkovich. Looking forward to this. Premieres at Cannes.

I don't get the hate for WTWTA, I thought it was much better than it should have been.
I'm down for anything from Spike.

Well, Maurice Sendak loved it and the studio suits didn't. So you're basically admitting not just to being completely artless, but also to not at all understanding why WTWTA works so well. It'd be one thing if you felt that it didn't work for you, but to dismiss it as "garbage" means that your opinion is worthless and can be easily ignored.

I really liked WTWTA and last I checked it grossed more than Jonze other efforts. Problem is the studio wanted a kid flick to cash in and Jonze wanted to make a movie portraying what it's like to be a kid.
Looking forward to this one.

wow I haven't seen butthurt like this in a long time. I didn't like Where The Wild Things Are because it was boring and tedious. Also because Max is a whiny, sniveling little brat. Also what a dumb thing to accuse me of not liking "arty" films. In the OP I said I loved Adaptation and Being John Malkovich, those certainly qualify as arty.

You were the epitome of butthurt! If you didn't care about my opinion you wouldn't have said anything. Go ahead and put me on ignore already, it'll be nice not to have to respond to your comments anymore.

But I'm not at all "butthurt", because as I said, I don't really care what you think. Although you are mirroring your butthurt onto me as a passive-aggressive way to cope. Sad stuff.

Spike Jonze wrote and directed Her, which stars Joaquin Phoenix, Amy Adams, Rooney Mara, Samantha Morton and Olivia Wilde. The film is about a guy who falls in love with the voice of a computer, a la the iPhone’s Siri. Warner Bros will open the pic November 20, 2013 in limited release, two days before fellow specialty pic Nebraska from Alexander Payne and Paramount, Disney’s Delivery Man and of course Lionsgate’s The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. Her has been percolating for a while, with Megan Ellison’s Annapurna Pictures coming aboard to finance it in March 2011. Jonze’s last feature was 2009′s Where The Wild Things Are. Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions has international rights.

Before today I'd never seen a credible negative critique of "Where the Wild Things Are" from somebody I respected.
After today I've still never seen a credible negative critique of "Where the Wild Things Are" from somebody I respect.

When Warner Bros. recently announced that Spike Jonze's new film, Her, would be released November 20, we were excited, and not just because Jonze's first film since 2009's Where the Wild Things Are has got to be one of our most-anticipated premieres of the year. The thing that really piqued our interest is how the WB press release casually included Scarlett Johansson in a stacked cast that already featured Joaquin Phoenix, Rooney Mara, and Amy Adams; while not much is known about Her beyond the tantalizing premise — "A lonely writer develops an unlikely relationship with his newly purchased operating system that's designed to meet his every need" — it seemed surprising that Jonze could have cast an A-list Avenger in his film and kept it under wraps for the better part of a year.
This week, Jonze got in touch with Vulture to clarify Johansson's casting: She'll be providing the voice of the operating system, a pivotal part that had formerly been Samantha Morton's.
Here's what Jonze had to say about the recasting in an e-mail yesterday:
I think, unfortunately, it's pretty normal in terms of my not-quite-painless-for-everyone-involved 'process' of discovering what the movie is.
Samantha was with us on set and was amazing. It was only in post production, when we started editing, that we realized that what the character/movie needed was different from what Samantha and I had created together. So we recast and since then Scarlett has taken over that role.
I love Samantha. I've been friends with her forever and I hope we make lots of things together in the future.
Be well,
Spike
Audiences in Los Angeles might get their first look (or listen) at Johansson in action this weekend: Jonze is expected to show clips from Her at the Los Angeles Film Festival during a Saturday night panel dedicated to the Being John Malkovich director's ouevre.

looks like a better Lars and the Real Girl, for lack of better comparison. in our immediate reality, this concept would just be downright creepy. film-wise, it looks brilliant. can't wait.

Lars and the Real Girl is an excellent comparison. Good movie. Hope this one is just as good.
