The Purge (2013) (D: DeMonaco; S: Hawke, Heady)
Ethan Hawke reteams with his Assault On Precinct 13 helmer James DeMonaco for Universal‘s The Purge. The thriller is set in an America wracked by crime and overcrowded prisons where the government has sanctioned an annual 12-hour period in which any and all criminal activity becomes legal. When an intruder breaks into the home of James (Hawke) and Mary (Lena Headey) during the yearly lockdown, it threatens to turn their family into the monsters they’re trying to stop. Produced by Jason Blum of Blumhouse, Platinum Dunes’ Michael Bay, Brad Fuller and Andrew Form, and Sébastien Kurt Lemercier, the pic opens May 31.

I'll second the agreements that it looks solid, but if I already thought their kid was a shithead during a two-minute trailer, I don't know if I'll be able to tolerate the character for 90 minutes.

Yeah. That kid? Totally ruins the whole thing for me. Iffy on it. Maybe the killers hate them some ******s? That was the first thing I thought of when the trailer unfolded.

It was. I always laugh how ****** is censored but other racist things like that aren't. I think we tested it out a bit in the Django Unchained thread.

I guess I'll go against what everyone else here thinks and say this looks absolutely terrible. The premise appears so stupid I'm not sure i could dedicate 5 minutes to it much less 2 hours.
Ethan Hawke is a solid actor though and I'm sure he could raise the quality of the film just through his performance.

The initial premise seems cool, but it started to sound a bit weaker when they let the stranger in. I'll check it out.

Saw this preview with Evil Dead and I think this is a good premise that will suffer from poor execution of the idea. It just gives off the vibe that it will devolve into a typical thriller with the purge as the backdrop as opposed to being about the purge itself.
