Movies You Like, But Won't Defend

Basically, movies you like to watch and enjoy, but won't go out of your way to argue its merits if you come across someone who thought it sucked because you could very much see how someone could think it sucked.

Examples of what I like and will defend:

-Sleepy Hollow- I think it's Tim Burton's best movie. Many don't get what it's going for and I will happily explain all of the Hammer horror connections to maybe help someone better enjoy. Granted, they might just walk away thinking me a nerd, but who cares?

-The first two Mummy movies- they're fun.

-Matrix Reloaded- I think this one stands up pretty well with the first one.

What I like, but won't defend:

-Van Helsing- goes down the tubes pretty quick in the third act. Until that point, I still find it entertaining .

-Matrix Revolutions- I think it works okay in the whole scheme of things, but feels like a lazy wrap-up overall.

-Oz the Great and Powerful-like I said in my review, it's good but not great . Many can and will hate it, and I'm not going to argue that it has finer points because those won't really redeem it overall.

-Hansel and Gretel-I dug it, but have to acknowledge it's not a good movie. Just dumb and entertaining.

Re: Movies You Like, But Won't Defend

Honestly, a lot of the movies that seem to get a lot of hate around here:

Armageddon
Forrest Gump
American Beauty
A Beautiful Mind
Crash
Jurassic Park 2
I'm sure there are many others too.

I'm not trying to start a fight with the forum or anything. I've just never understood the rabid hate towards certain movies here and I admit that I actually like a lot of the movies you guys seem to hate the most. I can understand them not being your favorites but I don't understand why they're hated SO much.

Superman Returns - Yup, I realize all the shortcomings, but I still kind of enjoy it.

The Day After Tomorrow
I watch this movie once a year and never get tired of it. I do however understand the ridiculousness of it all.

Agreed. Except, I'll actually defend them and did on one of the blu-ray reviews here.

There's a lot of movies I like that aren't worth the energy to "defend" because it falls on deaf ears. Seems the moment a flick gets on the public hate list you get blasted for dare liking it. First one that came to mind was Daredevil. I don't understand the hardcore hate that one receives of all the comic book movies out there but whatever. I liked it in the theater. I loved the director's cut even more. I did a review for a local paper that I worked at when it was released. Someone at another movie screening that week recognized me and started talking loudly how much Daredevil sucked. That's when I first saw the hate for that film.

Underworld! I like it and usually end up watching it whenever it's on. I know it has it's problems, and because of that I won't defend it.

I just chalk up such opinions to cynical pretentiousness... motivated by a self-important, cynical sense of (psuedo) intellectualism deeply held by the disturbed psyche of "arm-chair", movie-maker wanna-be's.

All probably due to an older sibling pissing in their corn flakes, having their lunch money stolen by school-yard bullies, and a lack of vitamin D from still living in their parents basement.

I too enjoy some Bruckheimer/Bay stuff but understand that they are mostly stupid fluff. Let's be honest, there's no way Top Gun wouldn't be getting bashed to no end if this forum had been around back in the day.

Agree with these except JP 2. I actually really like Crash but everyone seems to hate it.

Also, fuck you, internet! Prometheus was awesome.

Re: Movies You Like, But Won't Defend

Transformers: Dark of the Moon is a fun balls to the wall action flick. I don't try to defend it because part 2 of the series was so bad it drove away even the Transformers apologists. There are plenty of things to hate about part 3 but also some pretty cool action set pieces.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. I like the movie but don't defend it simply because I really can't. I understand pretty much every complaint people have with it.
