I know this was requested a bit ago,but it may be too late to be of value.

Well, they do have sales throughout the year, like the great $4.99 Fox Film Noir sale last year. I'm just not so sure how many of us ever check them for deals or are on their mailing list. If the thread fades away, no harm done.

Not a bargain to share, but a question about their "Friends with Benefits" program. I recall that J&R reserves the right to charge an annual fee (like Amazon Prime?) for jt, and I signed up roughly a year ago. I don't know how long this program has been around, but I've been tempted lately to find a way to (at least temporarily) unsubscribe...just in case. Any words of wisdom on dealing with this long term? Have they ever charged anybody?

Many of the Warner sets are still available for 14.99. I think the 10 off 75 is still active as well.

Greta Garbo collection is back on the site at 16.99 (w/ free shipping)

I wish those Warner Noir Collection sets would go on sale.

One negative is I ordered one set alone and they threw a big set into a bubble envelope. It's in alright condition, but this is a bit of a warning to me not to order single item sets from them.

and the other thing I find common is that quite often they ship incomplete orders while canceling some part of your order which will continue to show as 'in stock' on their site. order again and they will ship...go figure

Godzilla vs Megalon from Tokyo Shock is 3.99.
It says out of stock but they shipped mine right after I ordered.
Hoping for one with extras.

(I don't see anything about fees for being a member and if they change something they email you about it then if you pay the fee you agree to the changes or something. It says revised 10/12 so maybe read it again? I could be wrong cause I didn't read every word.)

For the person who'd like a link to the site:

http://www.jr.com/category/movies/

Some interesting possibilities for $3.99 but nothing that really jumps out at me and demands I take action. Anyone know what their shipping is per DVD? Apparently the only way I have to find out is to fill out all of my name/address info and I don't feel like doing that. -kd5-

I do remember that when signing up, but I've seen no hint of an annual charge. I use the program occasionally for free shipping, mostly on CDs.

Re: J&R MUSIC/DVD: Official Bargains Thread

This was a few days ago but I think as soon as you make an account when you order you are automatically enrolled in the program and shipping is free for anything with no minimum.

I got that godzilla dvd for 3.99 shipped but it was the bare bones version. Thanks mediocre blasters for nothing. I think the bare bones version has even more splice line artifacts thrown in as the one extra along with shifting contrast ratios.

Re: J&R MUSIC/DVD: Official Bargains Thread

Media Blasters is still waiting for approval from Toho for the extras on GODZILLA VS MEGALON, they don't want to screw up again like they did with DESTROY ALL MONSTERS (they had put unapproved extras on the disc).

MB wanted to get the GvM out on the market for kaiju fans to pick up a copy as the movie has not had a region 1 dvd release before so they went ahead and did a barebones release while waiting for Toho to approve the extras. MB announced that this DVD of GvM was going to be barebones well ahead of time. The copies of GvM with extras are a mistake -- the company that MB contracted with to press the DVDs used the wrong files and a small number were pressed and sent out before anyone knew the authoring company had screwed up.

Last I read Media Blasters is still intent on releasing Godzilla Vs Megalon with extras and on Blu-Ray once they get the go ahead from Toho.

Re: J&R MUSIC/DVD: Official Bargains Thread

I read all about it and more through hundreds of posts on various forums in the last few days. From what I read I thought I had an extras disc till I put it in the player.

Toho transfers for MB are high bitrate and progressive, but the black levels are too high (reduce brightness and the movie looks normal except for the millions of splices) and the audio bitrate on this one is really low: 112 for english making it harsh and a little tinny, 384 for japanese 5.1, and 96 for the commentary! Old Shriek Show discs had hard telecine and tons of grain causing mpeg artifacts and from what I read about their few blurays, they royally screwed them up too. This company is sloppy and it sucks.

I realize now I could sell this crappy disc for what I paid, reencode a fixed video track with uncropped scene and extras, and buy the extras one if it ever comes out on bluray.

Re: J&R MUSIC/DVD: Official Bargains Thread

I was in the physical store in Manhattan last week and am sad to report that the DVDs have been moved from the basement to a cramped section of the 2nd floor. Since I hadn't been there since August, it's news to me but may not be to others.

Is this is beginning of the end of the physical store? After the demise of HMV, Virgin and Tower, it's the only "mainstream" store down there.

Who knows, with the price of real estate in Manhattan.

I have no idea how they have survived this long.
