I just saw this one for the 2nd time and i swear it creeped me out just as much as the 1st time. There is little action, mostly words and it relays such a terrifying zombie-like story. Stephen McHattie is just amazing in this role...

Nice to see some love for Pontypool, which is the most unique take on the "zombie" genre I've seen in years. If you can track down the book I'd recomend reading it, completely different from the movie, just the same world and situation.

My creepiest movie is an old classic.



This movie has always creeped me out, never became laughable as it aged. What creeps me out the most is the images in the movie outside of the supernatural stuff; the woman in the speeding horse carriage at the start, the nuns walking down the windy street, the empty, misery filled faces in the satatorium...

My pick for the most frightening image in any movie I've seen, has to be when he enters the girl's room for the excorcism, and sees not her, but his mother in the bed. It makes me gasp every single time.

'Pontypool' was a cool little indie.

My pick for the best creepy film would be the Dreyer masterpiece 'Vampyr'. Hitchcock called it "the only film worth watching twice."

'Paranormal Activity' is also a perfect example of creepy.

I was coming in here to say this. Also, Sinister is a more recent to give me the creeps. Also, the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

I just watched this recently and feel like this may be one of the most overrated movies I've seen in quite some time. Yes I understand it's well acted, yes I understand it's well filmed, but to me it just dragged on and on. I couldn't wait for it to end. I'm kind of shocked so many people like this movie. I like lots of movies much older than this so I'm definitely not a modern movie snob who needs constant action or violence to entertain me. Do people generally like this or are they just bandwagon jumpers because its supposed to be great?

What an odd thing to say. It's been one of my favorite ghost story movies for many years, and I've seen it 5 or 6 times. Creeps me out and impresses me with its artistry and atmosphere every time. Sorry it wasn't your cup of tea, but that doesn't mean anyone who likes it is a "bandwagon jumper."

For anyone else who's wondering, it's a pretty faithful film version of Henry James' "The Turn of the Screw," a classic that has also been criticized as "totally boring" for over a century by those who don't get it. It's so subtle that some people don't even realize it has one of the most awesome plot twists of all time.

I love "The Innocents" too. I can't imagine people pretending they like it to impress other people.

A few that genuinely creeped me out as a kid, and one more recently:

Dead of Night (1945) The old time hearse driver scene freaked me out when I was 8.

Let's Scare Jessica to Death (1971) The 70's vibe was truly creepy when I saw this as a kid.

Dead End (2003) This low budget horror flick really impressed me, there's a shot of the car going down the highway at night that actually raised the hairs on the back of my neck.

Another vote for Carnival of Souls.

Yep. The Innocents is one the creepiest films I've ever seen...and not just because of the "ghost story" aspect.

The Tenant was the first that came to mind when I saw the thread title.

The Tenant is great, as is Rosemary's Baby for its exploration of the creepiness lurking behind everyday things (and people).

Don't Look Now is another top choice.

Can we determine a definition for "creepy", in contrast with "scary" and "eerie"?
To me, "creepy" deals largely with the subcoscious and involves the instillment of an unsettled feeling, but creepiness often has a gritty, jagged texture in comparison to eerieness, which is very similar in its insidious agency, but rather more elegant and clean. Creepy movies frequently use solitude, inclement weather, and off-kilter music scores as effective mechanisms.
"Scary" either entails overt jump-scares or a sense of being constantly on-edge and frightened (eg. Halloween).
"Eerie" most often concerns the supernatural. Something like The Changeling (1979) is a great example of eerieness.

The Changeling (1980) was also pretty good too.

Poltergeist disturbs me a bit. Some of those effects really really sell off what they needed to sell...even for today's standards. Still need to get the BD.

Synecdoche, New York could be one of the most brilliantly creepy and emotionally unsettling movies ever.
