"Son Of Ernest" to reboot the series

From Dark Horizons:

Ruckusfilm is planning a reboot/sequel to the "Ernest" comedy film series entitled "Son of Ernest" reports Variety.

The Ernest P. Worrell character, played by the late Jim Varney, appeared in nine films from 1987 to 1998 after he began life as a character in commercials.

Dan Ewen is penning the screenplay and will produce the film which centers on Worrell's long-lost son. Early discussions are already under way in regards to casting.

Clarke Gallivan, Coke Sams and John Cherry will produce

***********************************************

I'm very aware of how cornball the Ernest films are, but I grew up on Scared Stupid, Goes to Camp, Goes to Jail, and Saves Christmas. Varney played that character so well you'd have just assumed that's who he was.

While this will surely be terrible, with John Cherry producing there is some hope, I guess.

FWIW, a theater near my hometown in KY was the one with the largest single screen $$$ for Ernest Saves Christmas.

I hope it works out as well as Son of The Pink Panther.

They can't be any worse than the original movies, and won't make money anyhow, so this is the first-phase evolution of a non-starter. :groin:

Finally we'll get to see those unproduced scripts, and in a few short years the epic cycle will be complete.

Just curious have any movies with the title "Son of" been successful? Exclude "Son of Sam" because it wasn't a continuation and was about a serial killer.

That is what I think the name of a Ernest movie box set should be called.

I bought him going to camp. I bought him saving Christmas. I bought him going to jail. I even bought him fighting trolls. But I don't buy that Ernest ever had sex.

He didn't have to since his son was left on his doorstep... by Vern... just before he left town... without leaving a forwarding address.

And my parents probably dragged me there on opening weekend.

Heck, I was one of the five people who saw Ernest Rides Again on the big screen.

I hope the new Ernest is played by Sean Penn. It's time to bring some respectability back to the role.

Re: "Son Of Ernest" to reboot the series

This seems like a really odd franchise to try and reboot. Some of the originals had their moments despite being incredibly cheesy, I particularly enjoyed Ernest Scared Stupid and Ernest Goes to Camp, but I just have to wonder what the actual target audience for this would be. I'm sure hardly any of today's audience knows who Ernest even is so a son of Ernest won't draw people in. There might be a few fans left from back when the films were originally coming out and popular but still it doesn't seem like enough to warrant making new sequels, especially when the starring actor has passed on already.

The Son of the Sheik (1926)
Son of Frankenstein (1939)
Son of Paleface (1952)
Son of Flubber (1963)
Son of Rambow (2007)

... come to mind.

Re: "Son Of Ernest" to reboot the series

Wow, this seems like a terrible idea. Ernest is one of those characters that was so well-embodied by the actor that you just couldn't do it with someone else, even as the son. They might as well do "Son of Pee Wee" without Paul Reubens or "Son of Rocky" without Sly Stallone.
