Dave Grohl Confirms Foo Fighters Hiatus

Dave Grohl says his band Foo Fighters is officially taking a break.

Grohl posted an open letter to the group's Facebook account Tuesday, calling the band "my life," but noting "it's a good thing for all of us to go away for a while."

Grohl told fans Saturday at the Global Citizen Festival he didn't know when the band would play together again, and affirmed that in the letter.

"Without making a big deal out of it, we don't have any shows after this. This is it, man," Grohl said at the concert in NYC's Central Park. "Honestly, I don't know when we're gonna do it again... and this is the perfect place to do it."

He went more in-depth in the letter, writing, "Never in my wildest dreams did I think Foo Fighters would make it this far… There were times when I wanted to give up. But I can't give up this band. And I never will. Because it's not just a band to me. It's my life. It's my family. It's my world."

Grohl says he's "not sure" when the Foo Fighters will play again, and is now focused on his forthcoming Sound City documentary and album. "A year in the making, it could be the biggest, most important project I've ever worked on," he said of the project. "Get ready… It's coming."

He created Foo Fighters in 1994 after his time as the drummer in Nirvana, recording the band's self-titled debut before inviting other members to join. The band has been one of rock 'n' roll's most enduring critical and commercial successes, winning 11 Grammys, including five earlier this year.

That announcement is somewhere right in the middle of "We're going to take a few years off to spend time with our families" and "We're breaking up."

But seeing as Josh is prepping the new QOTSA album and has summer 2013 dates set for that band, I'm losing a bit of that hope.

He said almost the exact same thing after the last album and tour.

If he hadn't made an announcement, no one would blink at them taking a few years off between albums.

I don't know why people are flipping out over this. They took a four year break between Echoes, Silence, Patience, & Grace (2007) and Wasting Light (2011). I fully expect they'll be back again at some point but Dave and Taylor both have side projects that they maybe want to work on for a while.

Don't all bands take time off between world tours and new albums.... this would only be a concern to me if Dave said that FOO is over (and even then I wouldn't belive it). Here's hoping to see them at The Palace of Auburn Hills in 2015.

I'm wondering if any of the US dates are going to get pushed back. Hopefully not as I'm supposed to see them in August.

I'll be damn if they didn't break stride and kept the song going. You would think they would just stop what they are doing and check on him after that fall but nope.

Some of the comments are saying that he finished the show while sitting in a chair with a broken leg. Damn!

Yeah you've got to give Grohl credit. Breaks his leg, goes to the hospital, then comes back to finish the show. That's dedication to your fans.

The RFK 4th of July show especially. That's only 4 weeks from now.

It'd be cool if Grohl actually went with it.
