Led Zeppelin are not The Greated Band in Rock 'N' Roll History. Top 3, sure. But not the Greatest.

In your eyes what makes them so great? I'm not looking to get into an argument, just curious. There is no wrong answer of course.

I'd say they're number 2 after the Beatles.

One of the few, if only bands that excell in all areas.

1. Each member a master muscian. If you count Plant's voice.
2. Ability to write first rate songs. Yeah they ripped off some stuff but majority is original and killer.
3. Ability to produce killer albums. Only thing wrong with the lesser thought of ones is that they are not iconic classics like the majority.
4. Performance ability. Can improvise and go go into 15 minute version of 5 minute song off top of their heads and stay in sync.

Re: Led Zeppelin: Celebration Day

What impressed me alot about Led Zeppelin is that every time they performed a song live they would never play it the same way.
Every live performance they would tweak the songs and add changes to every instrument. They would do all kinds of improv and jamming.
If you see them perform Kashmir live, Jimmy Page solos all over the end of the song. Those familiar with the song know that it never had a guitar solo.

I can barely listen to Zeppelin anymore. Their first album is still good, and Houses of the Holy is great all the way through. Other than that, it's isolated tracks here and there that I still enjoy, like "Since I've Been Lovin' You" off of III. But easily one of the most overrated, overplayed bands in history.

Watching the videos can see the queues/signals telegraphing between them the end of an improv and return to the basic song. When I saw The Firm in 1986 the last encore was a 45 minute version of "I Just Want To Make Love To You". Page just stood in one spot for about 30 minutes jamming away.

I hear you. My favorite band but I'm sick to death of the over play.
