World's first color film discovered

Well, actually revived, because it's been known about since it was first shot, but technical hurdles (like being shot on oddball 38mm gauge film) kept it from being displayed properly until now.

This BBC link has the footage.

The world's first colour moving pictures dating from 1902 have been found by the National Media Museum in Bradford after lying forgotten in an old tin for 110 years.
This Huffington Post link has a better and (seemingly) more accurate write-up of the history of the footage.

The earliest movies known to be shot in color have been revived by film archivists, who on Wednesday gave an audience at London's Science Museum a glimpse at cinema's first attempts to show us the world as we see it.
It sounds like three strip Technicolor, except that it required three syncronized projectors to show the three tinted films onto the same screen. No wonder it took until now to display it properly.

Edit: Fixed the Huffington Post link, thanks Mr. Salty.

I was shocked to find out it's not some form of pornography.

I dunno, the kids whacking the goldfish bowl with sunflowers seems kind of kinky

Weird looking at footage of children who probably died of old age many years ago.

A good amount of people in films from the 30's are dead. Besides a few munchkins, Wizard of Oz is full of dead people.

Except they didn't. They used the computer to simulate the projectors. Lame.

It's possible that the children's children have died of old age.

Amazing, very cool. Looking at this poignancy one can only wonder at the crazyness the rest of the 20th century would occur. This is kind of like discovering that 1860 chemical recording of the french lady singing.

Of which none of them have a clue their great-great grandparents were fish bowl whackers. Probably for the best.
