NO ONE LIVES (2012; USA) Ryuhei Kitamura's horror film
Couldn't find an existing thread about this film here, so figured I'd start one with these Intro and Q&A videos I shot at the TIFF Midnight Madness premiere last night, for those who might be interested in such things. Be aware that the Q&A contains at least a couple of MAJOR SPOILERS (which unfurl in a pair of consecutive sequences in the film), and so should be approached with caution.

How was the movie? Not watching the vid since I don't want to be spoiled but I was really considering going to this one but fell through at the last minute.

I thought it was alright. I rated it 7 out of 10 at IMDB, for what it's worth. I liked the central conceit that the hero
, although his big reveal is probably just a wee bit too telegraphed for my liking: too many conversations early on wherein a subject is talked around, that sort of thing. Thought the twists were logical, the action sound, the kills inventive, etc.

I like Ryuhei Kitamura's directing so I'm interested to see this. Been a fan since Versus, and thought Midnight Meat Train was surprisingly competent considering the content and was a great looking little film.
This is another lower budget horror flick ($2.9m) and I hope it turns enough of a profit to get another US flick from Kitamura.
Edit: Nevermind, it seems Kitamura is directing a Nicholas Cage/Mickey Rourke movie next

This slipped under my radar and was brought back to my attention in that "what other Japanese samurai films should I watch" thread due to Ryuhei Kitamura directed.
Yeah, it was fucking cool! Great kills and gore, Would totally love a sequel or prequel.

Figured you like it. I just bought the blu ray as I had forgot about it until that thread brought it up too.

Yeah, I picked up the Blu-ray. Was surprised to see that it was a WWE production, so I assume the big guy is a wrestler?

My TIFF videos in the original post somehow got de-linked, but I've replaced them. In the second one, Clay shares some details about his major spoiler sequence (from 6:13 - 9:00). It's typically fluffy film fest Q&A stuff, but might be of interest.

I thought this was an enormous steaming turd. I went in cold, not remembering why I had acquired this flick or what it was about. As soon as I saw "WWE Presents", I thought, "Oh, no", and sure enough, it ended up being as bad as one would expect from the trashy, tacky wrestling conglomerate. I don't know what lured Tergeson in to this dreck, but he's a decent actor and should have demurred. The rest of the perfs were wretched, especially the guy playing the psycho. The dialogue was nothing but effing and blinding, and the plot was illogical and simple-minded. Direction was the only non-inept aspect of the flick, and it too had its eye-rolling moments, such as when the survivors pile into the suddenly-functioning Jeep, they drive for five minutes (camera firmly on Jeep; obviously the budget didn't extend to a tow dolly), and then one of the girls from the house jumps in front of them. Terrible spatial continuity.
This pic is pretty close to being completely without merit, and I can't believe it has a 6-average at IMDb, as well as a 47% approval rating at RT. Those figures are inconceivable to me.

You might be better off using Metacritic -- since the professional critical consensus there agrees with you on this one -- and avoiding all the amateur-grade spite-reviewing, political b.s. and studio marketing that now wholly pollutes both IMDb and RT, which have essentially become jokes to these eyes.

Ah, Metacritic. I've always sort of glossed over it. I'll give it a try. Thanks, Brian.
Differences of opinion are one thing, but I don't know if I've ever seen such a chasm between a film's IMDb score and my reaction to the film. Typically, my rating falls within at most three or four points of the IMDb average. It's a horror flick, so I always go in with reduced expectations (though I love a great horror film), but this was just plain rubbish, I thought. I have seen worse, even far worse, but this is down there towards the bottom.
