I can't say the premise intrigues me much, but I liked what Bayona did with The Orphanage, and I'd eat Watts' ass like a buttered roll.

Despite loving both McGregor and Watts, this movie looks like a shitty tearjerker and I have no interest in it.

Dammit I didn't cry during Les Miserables and I cried during this one.

That was NOT an enjoyable movie experience AT ALL which attests to how masterful the movie is. I really felt I was living the tsunami with the characters.

"The Impossible" is based on a true story of the effects of the famous tsunami that hit southeast Asia in 2004 around Christmas on a family of 5 visiting a resort for holiday.

Henry and Maria (played by Ewan McGregor and Naomi Watts) along with their 3 sons have their lives torn apart, along with the rest of the victims of the tsunami, and struggle to stay alive and find their way back to each other. Maria and eldest son Lucas form a pair after surviving the onslaught and being shuttled through the area from the tremendous flow of water and treacherous debris. Henry and the 2 other sons have their own struggles.

Overall, a pretty strong and straight forward film of survival and hope in bleak times for this family, representing a microcosm of the harrowing after-effects of a natural disaster for all who were swept away. Naomi Watts does solid work, the eldest boy (played by Tom Holland) is also good. McGregor has less to work with in the script, but does push the film's plot along.

You'll hug your family a little more urgently after seeing this film.

I give it 3 stars, or a grade of B.

I don't know why this film isnt getting more attention. Naomi Watts is amazing. I haven't seen Amour or Beasts of the Southern Wild yet, but it's going to be a crime when Watts doesn't win. I can't believe she hasn't won an Oscar yet. Every time I see her in a movie I can't look away from her. She is just amazing.

My favorite movie of the year. Incredibly sad, amazing, and tense all at the same time

on the technical side, I didn't realize that this was almost the same team that did the 'The Orphanage' - from the stunning scary sfx (the tsunami), the cinematography, to the sound (the latter of which is exemplary).

Same director as The Orphanage too. I almost wish they had gone with Spanish actors and done it in Spanish. The original family was Spanish. The Orphanage is superbly acted. Not that this wasn't, but I think it could have been even better and closer to the original story. Not that I personally care but there's a bit of an outcry at Americanizing the story to make it more widely seen by American Audience$.

you mean Americanized as in casting an Austrailian Actress and Scottish Actor.

It actually has nothing to do with Americanization since America wasn't the target audience, though they did want the broader European appeal so they cast well known actors. Summit bought distribution rights for the US but didn't actually fund the project.

My wife and I are seeing this tomorrow. She actually got emotional during the trailer alone, so I am wondering how tense the actual movie will be.

I got emotional during the trailers as well. I was literally drained when I left the theatre after seeing it.

It's a pretty visceral viewing experience. You'll wince at the times when they get hurt during the tsunami, and trying to stay alive through it all.
