Hushpuppy, an intrepid six-year-old girl, lives with her father, Wink, in "the Bathtub," a southern Delta community at the edge of the world. Wink's tough love prepares her for the unraveling of the universe; for a time when he's no longer there to protect her. When Wink contracts a mysterious illness, nature flies out of whack-temperatures rise, and the ice caps melt, unleashing an army of prehistoric creatures called aurochs. With the waters rising, the aurochs coming, and Wink's health fading, Hushpuppy goes in search of her lost mother.

Saw this tonight. Really interesting hybrid, and it's quite light on the fantasy / sci-fi elements (which, to be perfectly honest, was slightly disappointing). Quvenzhané Wallis is an absolute miracle and one of the best children I have ever seen in front of a camera. She makes or breaks the movie, as she has to carry it on her shoulders, and she succeeds.
The only surprise is how short the movie is (about 90 minutes), although it felt longer.
Recommended.

Interesting to me that child actors tend to do a better job than adult ones nowadays.

Reviews are coming in. Average of 97 on Metacritic.
This sums it up nicely:

This sums it up nicely:
It’s difficult to explain exactly what Beasts Of The Southern Wild is, though it’s undoubtedly something extraordinary: like a live-action Miyazaki film, with Days Of Heaven narration, set in a dirt-poor community at an unspecified time of crisis.

I absolutely loved it! The praise for Wallis is right on, but one shouldn't diminish the great and genuine work from the rest of the cast. Dwight Henry as the father character, Wink, was wonderful; I was amazed he'd never acted before.

A fair movie but interesting...didn't like the shaky cam...and great acting by the kid by the way. The 90 minutes certainly felt like 3 hours.

Forgot to post thoughts on this, saw it a month or two ago, but I enjoyed it. It did tend to feel kind of long at times.

I'm going to get flack for this, but I just wasn't in to this. In fact I didn't even finish it. After watching the trailer I had very little interest in seeing this, but the unanimous praise and word that the girl who plays Hushpuppy is a front runner for Best Actress I decided to give it a try.
I do not think it is a bad movie, I have nothing bad to say about the little girl's performance....but I just did not care what was happening. The story failed to grab me. I was bored.
I'm sure someone will say "well go watch Transformers you ADHD afflicted mouth breather!"
I do like dramas. The Shawshank Redemption is my favorite film. I like plenty others. This one just didn't work for me. I won't criticize it if it wins a bunch of awards though.

I saw it several months ago. I thought it was really good but not worthy of the (at the time) mass critical acclaim it received. I also think the inevitable critical backlash was unwarranted. Glad to see it's popping up on a few "best of 2012" lists.

Didn't love it either but thought it was visually very interesting and a unique film worth watching. I just went in with too high expectations and didn't love the general direction of the plot.
