The Last Exorcism II: Yet Another Exorcism Thread (Gass-Donnelly, 2013)

Ed Gass-Donnelly, whose credits include This Beautiful City and Small Town Murder Songs, will direct the R-rated follow-up to the 2010 PG-13 pic that grossed $70 million worldwide on a budget of $1.5 million. Star Ashley Bell is returning to reprise her role as Nell Sweetzer for the Damien Chazelle-penned film. As with the original, Eli Roth is producing via Arcade Pictures with Eric Newman, Marc Abraham and Tom Bliss producing via Strike Entertainment. Studiocanal will fully finance and kick off international sales at the European Film Market in Berlin next month. The original picture centered on a charlatan exorcist facing a crisis of conscience who invites a documentary crew on his final exorcism where he comes across the possessed Nell. I’ve been told the sequel will pick up three months after that film left off, although further story details are being kept under wraps. Delivery is expected for late 2012. Roth says he’s “very, very excited to continue to this story. Obviously with the title of the first one we had not planned on a sequel, but we love the story and subject matter and had what we feel is an inspired idea to continue it. As you can see from other recent films, fans around the world are fascinated by this subject matter, and we want to go deeper and darker this time. The first film worked great as a PG-13 psychological film, but now we want to go R-rated and show the true horror of what this subject matter offers. The biggest creative challenge will be coming up with the right title!” Newman says, “On behalf of the producing team, we are excited to put the next installment of Nell’s story in the capable hands of Ed Gass-Donnelly. His naturalistic style and performance-based filmmaking make him the perfect choice.” Studiocanal EVP of international distribution, Harold Van Lier, adds, “We are horrified to bring to the marketplace the eagerly awaited sequel to our 2010 worldwide hit. This much bigger scale movie will unravel a profoundly scarier chapter to Nell’s battle between good and evil. God have mercy.”

I'm curious if Studiocanal is moving forward with a sequel due to The Devil Inside's $35 million opening weekend that came literally out of nowhere? You know, despite the fact said film will probably not cross the $55 million domestic mark due to a 78% drop on weekend two and what looks like an even bigger drop on weekend three. I wonder if Lionsgate will pick up the US rights or if another studio will pick them up instead...
At least it's rated R? Am I right?

I am in the minority that i didn't hate the first one... but no reason for a second one.

The Last Exorcism was a tidy, small, if a little too obvious, horror film. I'm all for a sequel. It can only get more interesting as the first one felt like an introduction to a bigger story. And, it's not like it's considered "sacred" as an important horror film or anything so if even if the sequel sucks it's not going to mar the first one.

Pizza, your opinion is too rational. But I agree with it.

I thought it was pretty damn good until the ending threw it all out the window and totally blew the whole thing for me.

Having re-watched the first a little while back....I actually really liked it - including the ending - not sure why it took a second viewing but I guess I just appreciated it more or something.
Not sure why they're making a second one...but whatever....could be interesting.

I disliked the first film when I saw it in theaters. Got a review copy on BD, watched it again and found myself appreciating it more. I actually think it helped going into my second viewing knowing that
Not sure it needed a sequel, but I might watch it on cable or something.

Zzzzzzzz.
They fooled me once, not going to happen twice. It looks like they inserted the main character from the first film into a completely generic demon narrative for this. Pass, but I might watch it on cable.

Like the original, the film is going out with a PG-13 rating as confirmed by the new television spots.
The producers were so gung-ho about this film going out as an R. I wonder what happened... oh right, money and CBS Films is in desperate need of it.

Is The Last Exorcism the one without an ending, that makes you go to a website? If so, I hope no one sees this film, because that's total bullshit.

Naw, that was The Devil Inside. I haven't seen it but I know because everyone was pissed off and there were major riots. I actually liked The Last Exorcism, it was a bit creepy and I like downbeat endings to my horror movies.

My wife and I both fell asleep during different parts of this movie. Most of the scares were the jump type and they handcuffed themselves by going the PG-13 route. I would give it about 2 out of 5 stars at most.
