The Adventures of Tintin vs. War Horse
So we just had Spielberg essentially go against himself last month. Kind of rare to see actually...can't think of that happening at all actually.
Anyways....which Spielberg flick was the better film? Which did you like more? Why? Etc etc....

Re: The Adventures of Tintin vs. War Horse
I'll have to see War Horse to actually vote, but I hope the poll was inspired by this exchange
:
:All i know is I have my fingers crossed for Tintin to bomb because I really really really dont want to see extremely talented filmmakers like Spielberg, Jackson and Edgar Wright waste any of their time at all making these terrible looking things. If you like this thats great but I do not.
I am just happy Spielberg actually has War Horse coming out as well this year.

I've wanted to see Spielberg make Tintin ever since I heard about Herge and Spielberg's meeting. This really is 30 years in the making, on some level. Not sure if that will compare to 65 million years, but I can hope.
War Horse, yeah the trailer looks schloppy. And the Grandfather's speech is corny as shit, about not looking down and floating over a war. But the book was damn good, and I've heard the play is amazing, so I'll be seeing that as well.

ROTTEN TOMATOES:
Tintin overall positive reviews= 75%
Warhorse overall positive reviews=77%
TOP CRITICS
TINTIN = 67%
WAR HORSE= 85%
Metacritc
TINTIN = 68%
WAR HORSE=72%
ALso it looks like War Horse is definitely gonna outgross Tintin at least here in the states thank goodness and War Horse cost $66 million as opposed to Tintins staggering $135 million budget.
My vote goes to War Horse. Loved it. Hated the trailer for Tintin so bad i refuse to pay to see it except on netflix. I hope it is enjoyable though. Spielberg rarely misses. I just loathe the look of it and the animation technique.

So box office is not an indicator of quality and now critic opinion isn't an indicator either? So what is an indicator of quality then? If I can't look at either box office totals or critic reviews in order to decide whether or not to watch a move, how should I make my decision?

I would say your own opinion is the best indicator of quality for yourself.
And an aggregate score, while it may give you an indicator of the general trend of critical opinion, doesn't mean that you will agree with the trend.
My point is, if you're going to compare two films, it's better to, I don't know, compare and contrast elements of those films, as opposed to throwing out Rotten Tomato and Metacritic percentages. They might be useful as a quick reference, but certainly aren't the be all, end all of an argument.

The movie won't even make back it's budget. And even if, by some miracle, it does, don't movies have to basically double their budgets in this day and age to be considered successes? It certainly won't do that.

Normally Spielberg films do, I assume. Let's see what this film does.

Re: The Adventures of Tintin vs. War Horse
War Horse is targeting an older audience, who don't rush out to see films. That combined with it's inevitable Oscar nominations should mean good returns for weeks to come.
I'm curious if everyone who voted in this poll actually saw both movies, or did some people who only saw Tintin just assume that War Horse wouldn't be something they'd enjoy. I fucking hate horses but thought the movie was great, even if it does have a few manipulative sentimental moments.

You're a guy right? I wonder if anybody has ever done a sociological study on this.
It seems like an inordinate number of males don't like horses for one reason or another, or even for no reason at all. On the flip side, is there a female on the face of the planet that doesn't love horses?
What is it about horses that make women love them so much? mdc3000, why do you hate horses so much? What's to hate about them? I have no strong opinion either way...I mean I like horses just fine, but have no desire to ever own one or even to ever ride one. I can count on one hand the number of times I've ever even touched a horse. I couldn't imagine hating them though. What about them is grounds for hatred?

Re: The Adventures of Tintin vs. War Horse
I saw both movies the same day - Tintin first, then Warhorse.
I thought Warhorse was a much better movie. I just felt more interested in it. I was sitting in Tintin, bored, distracted, and planning what I was going to do that evening.
With Warhorse, I was completely involved in the story.
