The Grandmaster - Wong Kar-wai's version of Ip Man

I didn't even know about this one until I read that Tony Leung had broken his arm training for the film. Apparently it will start shooting in September, assuming Leung recovers in time.

Was this planned before or after Donnie Yen's?

Wow. Just wow.

This looks like it could be a double scoop of awesome with some of those little sprinkles on top. Can't wait to see it.

Wuh? Wonder if Tony will do machine gun punches like Donnie.

Planned around the same time. Funny thing is I think they are working on Ip Man part 2 soon.

And Ip Man will probably have a part 3 after that.

Seems rather Hollywood to have two films of the same subject going into development nearly around the same time but it's Wong Kar-Wai and Tony Leung so I'm in.

Now I just gotta import Ip Man.

This is Wong Kar Wai we're talking about here. The film may in fact have no martial arts in it and instead be a meditation on being a practitioner of an ancient art in a modern society or who knows what. I doubt it will be a "double-scoop of awsome" action film.

Grandmaster - Wong Kar-wai's version of Ip Man

<object style="height: 390px; width: 640px"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/w6RCtE5wtQ0?version=3"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always"><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/w6RCtE5wtQ0?version=3" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" width="640" height="390"></object>

The trailer is kind of weak. Hopefully, the movie is better.

I'm not a huge WKW fan (I know a lot of people love his work) but this flat out doesn't seem like it'll work. It also looks like he wanted to remake The Matrix.

Ip Man was okay, as was its sequel. I don't see this being much different.

Hrm. I'm going through WKW's catalogue right now and while he seems to always hit a home-run with Tony Leung as his lead, Leung is not a martial artist.

It's a shame WKW and Donnie Yen couldn't have teamed up to do an Ip Man movie, as Yen's first film would have been a masterpiece with WKW's directorial style.

If this goes the more dramatic route with a few major set pieces (a la ASHES OF TIME), then I see Leung being a brilliant choice.

Pretty much my thoughts on this as well. I think that's why I find the teaser silly. Tony Leung is a fine actor and he has done action and martial arts before (albeit in a limited capacity) but the film suggested in the teaser begs for a genuine martial artist. If, on the other hand, it was a meditative drama with bursts of violence (like a martial arts equivalent to Appaloosa) then I could see Tony Leung being the perfect choice to portray Ip Man. In fact, that's what I was expecting wne I first heard that Wong Kar Wai and Tony Leung were teaming up to make this film.

This is what I expect. People seem to be judging the movie by a teaser trailer alone, which is never a good idea with Wong.

The trailer should of at least shown Ip Man doing Wing Chun which it didn't. That sort of bothers me since that's a huge part of who he is and why he's famous.

What bothers me is that there seems no creative impulse in HK anymore except to repeat successes that were done better 20, 30, 40 years ago. There hasn't been a decent martial arts film from HK since...I dunno, FIST OF LEGEND? DRUNKEN MASTER II? (Both are from 1994.)

I'm game for this. We still need Ashes of Time on BD btw...

HK era of badass ended w/ DMII. We get sprinkles here and there (thank you, Donnie Yen), but I think we can admit that however great some moments are in the more current HK action fare..the overall film is lacking. We get great fights but the overall package is alright. Also...we'll probably never get a Drunken Master II in it's original form on a us BD. Cuz there is no God.

Very nice imagery. Wong and Leung will always be enough for me to be game.

This movie actually got released? I thought it got stuck in a permanent state of post-production limbo.

That new trailer is just as weak as the teaser. I still want to watch it just to see their take on the character.
