The Strokes: New Album - March 22nd, 2011

Anyone else looking forward to this? Word is it's a return to the classic Strokes sound.

More details to come.

I can only hope that this is going to be as great as it could be. I enjoyed their third album but it wasn't even in the same league as the first two outings.

Nothing tops their debut though. I listened to that 5 or 6 times in a row the day it came out. It's still one of my favorite albums.

Agree with all this. I don't care if people thought they were "flavor of the day". Love this band am looking forward to hearing more.

I always get scared when a band tries to copy their "classic" sound. But I like most of their stuff even when it's totally evocative of other bands.

I loved their first two, but hated the third. Hoping for the best

Re: The Strokes: New Album - March 22nd, 2011

new details from Rolling Stone via pitchfork:

An article in the upcoming issue of Rolling Stone features some new information about the Strokes' forthcoming album, now with a confirmed release date of March 22 via RCA. The album is tentatively titled Angles, and the first single from the ten-song LP will most likely be "Undercover of Darkness".

Strokes guitarist Albert Hammond Jr. tells Rolling Stone that the album title represents "what the record sounds like. It comes from five different people," meaning that all of the members of the band contributed to the songwriting process. Other song titles mentioned include "Life Is Simple", "Taken for a Fool", "Call Me Back", "Radio Minor Madness", and "Machu Picchu", which Rolling Stone describes as "a rough wall of jangle over a hip-hop grind, as if the Strokes are cutting a Jay-Z track via the Rolling Stones' Aftermath."

The majority of the album was recorded at Hammond's studio in upstate New York, following scrapped sessions with producer Joe Chiccarelli (White Stripes, the Shins). "Life Is Simple" is the sole surviving song from the Chiccarelli sessions.

The band has plans to tour later this year, but Hammond emphasizes to Rolling Stone that "we want to come back strong but slowly, so we can grow live and also make new music. We want to release albums quicker."

Album cover art revealed:

I'm sure some people will hate it, but I think it's pretty cool.
Looks like a cross between the 1980s arcade games "Q-Bert" and "Crystal Castles".

I thought that original cover was the final art, glad it was only a temp.

I don't mind that single and the cover art for the album is pretty good. Probably will check this out when it's out. On a side note was the solo album that Julian released a couple years ago any good?

Re: The Strokes: New Album - March 22nd, 2011

Album leaked, just got through my first listen. I think it's a return to the sound of the first two albums. Also a couple of the tracks have an 80's vibe. I absolutely love the single Under the Cover of Darkness. None of the other 9 songs are as good, but I don't think there are any weak tracks either...a solid set. Further listening is required, but overall I'm satisfied and suspect this will be a Top 10 album of the year for me.

I hear Julian Casablancas recorded the vocals in a different studio than the band. Other than the single it sounds nothing like the debut album but a few songs would fit on Room on Fire.

Well it doesn't sound like First Impressions of Earth, that's for sure.

They're playing tonight a free concert here in Austin for SXSW. I caught them at ACL, so I'm passing this time around.

They played several of their songs during their show last night at SXSW. Good stuff. Between watching them and The Bangels last night, I felt like I was living in the 80's. Sans 80's hair of course.

"80's" in a Metallica/Slayer way? Or "80s" in a Flock of Seagulls way?
