Further releases weren't forthcoming, however, because there's just SO many episodes out there, and everybody has different favorites. How does a studio pick which ones to put on DVD? Well, it seems that the Fred Rogers Company has teamed up with Amazon's CreateSpace program to come up with a solution: you try to put all of them on DVD, but in a way that lets the fans (or their parents) pick which episodes to purchase...one by one!
Today Amazon/CreateSpace and The Fred Rogers Company have announced that beginning immediately Amazon is exclusively selling manufacture-on-demand (MOD) releases of Mister Rogers' Neighborhood on DVD, produced using the CreateSpace DVD-on-Demand program. Each disc contains a single half-hour episode (roughly 28 minutes), for $9.95 per title.
Expressing pride in working with The Fred Rogers Company, CreateSpace managing director Dana LoPiccolo-Giles said, "Our DVD on Demand technology will bring nostalgia to fans who grew up with Mister Rogers' Neighborhood, while helping to make new 'neighbors' among today's kids and families." Over 100 episodes are available to order right away (you can use either the above-provided link, or the button link below) and additional DVD releases of Mister Rogers' Neighborhood are expected to be available at Amazon.com through CreateSpace in the coming months. Immediately below is a selected portion of today's press release heralding the official announcement, and at bottom you'll find a sample package cover from Mister Rogers' Neighborhood - The First Program (the original 1967 debut episode, which was aired in black-and-white).
The legacy lives on! CreateSpace, part of the Amazon.com, Inc. group of companies and The Fred Rogers Company today announced that they will release highly anticipated classic TV series content on DVD. The initial wave of shows from Fred Rogers, creator and host of the pioneering children's TV series "Mister Rogers' Neighborhood" are newly available for sale on DVD exclusively via CreateSpace's DVD on Demand technology. In addition, the titles will be offered for digital sale through Amazon Video On Demand.
The unique CreateSpace DVD on Demand platform allows networks, studios and marketers such as The Fred Rogers Company to bring their TV content to a broad consumer base in a quick and cost-effective way since titles are manufactured only in direct response to customer demand. In addition, CreateSpace can distribute a wide range of content on-demand through Amazon.com and other channels, including Amazon Video On Demand.
"We are pleased to be able to present to today's audiences the enduring and innovative work of the incomparable Fred Rogers," said Bill Isler, president of The Fred Rogers Company. "Through the wonders of technology and the valuable CreateSpace manufacturing and distribution solution, we are able to share Fred's groundbreaking work with children like never before."
The first batch of 100 "Mister Rogers' Neighborhood" episodes covers four decades of the series and includes shows that have not been seen for more than 30 years. The collection features five episodes from the first week of "Misterogers' Neighborhood," which premiered - in black and white - on Feb. 19, 1968, on National Educational Television (N.E.T.), a forerunner to PBS. (The name of the show was changed to the existing three-word format when it went to color in 1968.) The initial releases also include 80 "classic" and 15 "middle years" episodes, which have not aired since the '70s, with memorable shows such as "The Death of a Goldfish" and "Mister Rogers Talks About Divorce," featuring Rogers' remarkable skill in addressing sensitive topics with his young audience. Among the other programs now available are: "Mister Rogers as a Boy," "Caring for the Environment," "Mad Feelings," "Is Santa Claus Real?" and "Making Mistakes."
"Mister Rogers' Neighborhood" has earned four Daytime Emmys and the distinction of being the longest-running children's TV show on public television. As a testament to the legacy of Rogers and the long-lasting appeal and importance of his "Mister Rogers' Neighborhood," the series - now in its 43rd year of successive broadcast - continues to be seen by millions each weekend on PBS stations nationwide. Rogers received a Lifetime Achievement Award during the 1997 Daytime Emmys and was recognized in 2002 with a Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian honor, for his contributions to children's development and education using broadcast television.

Call me old fashioned, but this is just awful. I guess they've set the bar just a little higher when it comes to ripping off consumers with these burn-on-demand releases. I mean, $10 for a single episode? Really? I can't be the only one that looks at this and thinks it is just an incredible ripoff.
I love how they can't figure out a way to release these. They could've done sets with episodes of a specific theme or a best of the year/decade or had people vote on their favourite episodes and release a fan favourites collection. But no. Their solution is to release individual episodes on individual discs for $10 a pop. Inspired.
At least give the consumers the ability to do something like Adult Swim did and put a few episodes on a single disc. I really hope this turns out to be a dud because while I thought $34 was ridiculous for a set of burned DVDs of a season of Doug, $10 for a burned DVD of Mr. Roger's Neighborhood is insane.

I was so pumped when I saw this thread title! But then I saw the 1 episode for $9.95. That is just ridiculous. I love this show, and still like watching it (even though most of the make believe land annoys me), but there is no way I would pay $10 per episode for it.

Re: Mister Roger's Neighborhood (Over 100 Episodes Available Burn-On-Demand From Amaz
$10 per episode!? 1 episode per disc!? It's PBS Mr. Rogers for crying out loud! Who is going to buy this for that price? Only diehard / hardcore fans would. Are there any for ... Mr. Rogers? This is ridiculous, IMO. Man, we were just talking about our DVD counts on another thread. So let's say some crazy fool bought all 141 episodes on there right now. That's a 141 individual DVD's making his count go up by 141!?
At the very least they should change this to 4 episodes for $10. But people want full seasons of shows. Not to select certain episodes to create their own custom seasons.
Well at least someone thought of releasing the show on DVD. You can see the difficulty in releasing shows like this. Imagine if they ever get around to releasing soap operas! How the heck would you go about releasing "The Young & The Restless" Currently on episode 9,530. 1 hour per episode.

1. Record from TV.
2. Burn to DVD = 10 cents or so.
This is what I did. I'm not paying a 1000% markup on a DVD I can do myself. Actually I didn't burn any of them to DVDs, I just put them on an external drive my kids can stream from.

Pretty sad and such a slap at fans of the show. For $10 put at least 3 or 4 eps on a disc.

So as bad as this is, Amazon has upped the ante with The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson.
Check out the thread on these releases. $12.99 for selected scenes of a single episode.
It seems as though the new model is "less for your money".

I would love for the MOD to just disaapear once and for all...what a ridiculous way to offer DVD content at such a half-ass rate and quality. CreateSpace blows! Avoid it like the plague.

The only one I'd consider paying that much for is when he goes out to the garage and shows a U-Matic VCR with a wall of tapes behind it, and keeps grabbing tapes and playing moments from past shows. When I saw that I SO wished I had something that could do that!

Do the people in charge even WATCH their own darned show?!? In the ones I've seen from the 80's and 90's, each week usually has a theme, and the Land of Make-Believe sequences are a continuing 5-part story. (I don't know if this is true of the entire run, but I wouldn't be surprised.) They need to put an entire week, 5 shows, about 2 hours and 20 minutes total, onto one disc, for it not to be a half-assed release.

This pricing is a throwback to the good ol' VHS days, folks. Because that's about what I could pay for a single episode of Star Trek back in the day on VHS.
I would like to get the episode with Bruce Haack just for historic purposes, though. But I still feel this is robbery to charge that much for a single episode. Ten bucks and a DVD full of 8 or so episodes of my choice then we might be talking.

Have you ever bought one? I have no complaints on the quality so far. Just the price.

$10 an episode is crap. It's a shame; I used to watch this all the time as a kid.

Seems like there would have been a better way to do this... like mentioned, an entire week for, say, $14.99. Run a sale at the start (buy 2, get 1) to get people interested, etc.
At this current pricing (for this and Carson), I can't see many people even getting a little interested.
That being said, I'm surprised that some of the major sports leagues haven't jumped on this MOD bandwagon. I'd actually cough up some decent change for certain NFL and NBA games.

They do have week theme options available on Amazon. Those ones are $30, so instead of buying 5 individually for $10 a piece, you save $20 when you buy their 2 disc sets of 5!

Think before you say something OK? I'm just not a fan of this version of DVD release as it is a half-assed approach of releasing titles on the format. Look...to each his/her own but don't say soemthing stupid like you just posted on here. The prices are just insane as well. Just my opinion here.

Maybe they are expecting schools or daycare operators to pay this price? I don't know who else would allow themselves to be fleeced by this.
