I was really looking forward to the new thriller STONE with Ed Norton, Mila Jovovich and DeNiro, but were surprised to find out that even though the film was released on Oct 8, it is playing nowhere in my state! I did a search on IMDB and it said the film is only playing in a few theaters in NY (and one in California)!

I don't get it.. thought this was an A-List/high profile picture. It has gotten a lot of great reviews from both critics and audience.

Why the limited engagement?

Great reviews? It's currently 53 at Metacritic and 44% at RottenTomatoes.

The buzz in Toronto was pretty bad for this film.

I think it's due to a Christian conspiracy.

well, it's 7.9 at IMDB.

but ratings aside, having those pretty big-name stars... and the (imho) pretty mediocre films lately that have been playing at my nearest cineplex, I would think this would be nationally distributed like most films.

Just trying to see why this has been targeted for such a (hopefully initial) limited release.

I was really disappointed that this wasn't playing anywhere too. Even if it's not great, Norton's participation makes it a must see for me. Wasn't Norton's last film, Leaves of Grass, also never released widely (or at all)?

It got a small theatrical release, but just came out on DVD and BD yesterday.

I'm completely disinterested in anything Norton does, but Leaves of Grass was great so maybe he delievers another great performance in this one.

The mixed reviews aren't promising.

It looks like this is opening in more theaters on the 23rd, as its playing at the big art house theater in baltimore.

because New York is the center of the universe and if a movie doesn't do well there, then it's just plain dead in the water - no need to release it to other cities/theaters ...

All I have to see is DeNiro's name in a credit, and I know the film is going to disappoint...might catch it as a rental.
