Hands-down, when Liz Taylor dies in JANE EYRE (1944) and Jane Eyre (Peggy Garner), lying next to her, screams at the realization. Brings me to tears just recalling it. And that evil bastard Henry Daniell, who caused the death, lecturing the grown-up Jane (now Joan Fontaine) a few scenes later.
Interestingly, Liz Taylor and Joan Fontaine are still with us, but Peggy Ann Garner died 26 years ago.

the teutonic knights throwing babies into a bonfire in Alexander Nevsky was pretty good for it's time. if it was redone with modern special effects it would be a winner
