The TOP 5 (dv-r) titles are........

Hello Friends,

Why don't we start a thread devoted to members listing their TOP 5 films that are currently on DV-R? Just a thought.

Do you mean DVD-R or DVR? If the latter, I don't know that it belongs in the DVD section.

Re: The TOP 5 (dv-r) titles are........

I got one of those Warner Tarzan sets and I'm pretty sure it had at least 5 movies in it, so that would get my vote. Generally speaking, I simply refuse to pay the high prices associated with these things. As a result, I almost never go to their websites and consequently don't really know what titles are available. That makes it difficult to rank the titles when I don't know what's in the general pool.

I agree with you totally Mdnitoil. The prices for these things are insane. I bought a few for my dad when WB had a 50% off sale a couple weeks ago. That's the only way Im buying these things. It has to be a huge sale.

Dracula Prince of Darkness
Frankenstein Created Woman/The Legend of the 7 Golden Vampires

Pretty sure these are the only DVD-Rs I own. And yeah, the prices are ridiculous. I caught Dracula: POD for $12.95 on Amazon....have no idea how it got that low as it was only there for a day and NONE of the other Hammer DVD-Rs have ever gone on sale to my knowledge. And I check like...every day.

GoldenWheels-

You can buy both the double feature DRACULA PRINCE OF DARKNESS/SATANIC RITES OF DRACULA and the double feature FRANKENSTEIN CREATED WOMAN/LEGEND OF THE 7 GOLDEN VAMPIRES on regular dvd right now over at Amazon. I believe both were oop at one point but they are both available once again.

Jeez, I feel like a real putz now pb....I went and looked, those are the ones I own. I have no idea why I thought that they were DVD-Rs. I could have SWORN (would have bet money! PAPER money!) that P.O.D. was a DVD-R and being the same series I guess I assumed the double feature was as well.

So, I guess I have absolutely nothing to add to this thread. At least I am a little better educated about my own collection now, so thanks.

EDIT: It kind of puts the rest of the Hammer double features in a different light for me though....22 bucks is garbage for a DVD-R but way more acceptable for a real double feature on two discs. I've held off buying them in the vain hope they go on sale someday. Maybe I should just bite the bullet--though part of me will be sad panda when I actually FINISH my Hammer Horror collection someday.

Re: The TOP 5 (dv-r) titles are........

Just FYI, those Anchor Bay Hammer double features are all officially OOP, so you can forget about a sale. The deal with these is that a couple of years ago, Amazon started listing the Hammer stuff as back in print, but the fine print is that they were burnt rather than the original pressed discs. Also, a lot of those original pressed discs were double sided with the extras on side b. I'm guessing the burnt versions just give you the movie. In almost every case, you can probably find an OOP pressed disc for not a whole lot more than settling for the burnt version. If I recall, only Shatter and the Quatermass titles were going for stupid money. Of course I finished my collection years ago, so I'm a little out of touch with prices these days.

Re: The TOP 5 (dv-r) titles are........

Boy, the perils of typing and searching to fast at work...When I got home last night I checked out my P.O.D. and it is indeed the DVD-R one. When pb said they were available at Amazon as real discs I did find a pressed on but didn't notice it was an out of print second party only deal. I'm okay with it since I have it--but in the future I may try to go second party to get pressed ones.

mdnitoil: I kind of figured that on the sale unfortunately...except for the two DVD-Rs I have I consider all the others less desirable Hammers and have been waiting on a new price for probably over a year....with no results. The day I logged in and saw POD for 12.95 I almost plotzed...it was back to full price within an hour. (Abominable Snowman had some CRAZY prices for a while there as well btw!)

Re: The TOP 5 (dv-r) titles are........

Anyone want to cast their vote for the top 5 HORROR movies available on DVD-R?

Btw, I've purchased two DVD-Rs so far: RUGGLES OF RED GAP (Universal) and DON'T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK (WB). I purchased them at Amazon. Haven't watched them yet though? Has anyone else here purchased these titles? Have u had any problems with them?

Re: The TOP 5 (dv-r) titles are........

I've been trying not to buy these things. Just recently I was reading a thread on the monster kids forums about a guy who bought one of the Warner Archives within the last 9 months. The thing played great for a while. Typical collector guy, treats his stuff with care. A few months later pulled it out and it stalls, stutters, pixelates and freezes. Does the same thing in multiple players. Of course now it's well past his 30 day warranty window so he's stuck with a coaster.

Now, my original point was that I try not to buy these things unless I can back them up onto a more durable media. Until I get more hard disk space, there is no way I'm going to buy these things because they can crap out on you at any point in time.

All that being said, the few titles I did purchase were Tarzan titles so I really can't cast a vote for horror movies. If we do jungle action I might have some input.
