Songs that don't age

We all hear songs in bars, clubs and even stores and when they are played, they still sound/seem "fresh". What songs would you say seem ageless? The first song that comes to my mind that I hear more than any older tune that still sounds current is the Human League's "Don't You Want Me".

You?

Re: Songs that don't age

Not sure if this counts in that it's not a "timeless classic" but the songs The Flat Earth and Screen Kiss from Thomas Dolby's '84 album, The Flat Earth, sound as fresh as anything from today.

It's funny...back when Grunge was all the rage, songs like "Don't You Want Me" and other synthpop classics were labelled as obviously dated. Now that synthpop is back in style, they sound fresh again.

Songs like Gary Numan's "Cars" and other early '80s dark New Wave stuff still sound futuristic.

Re: Songs that don't age

I've said for 25 years now : "Every Breath You Take" is the one song from the Eighties (and probably since) that would sound completely fresh and not at all dated even a hundred years from now. It's timeless.

I'm sure these guys would agree :

+1 to that. The song can apply to almost any instance in life and it just never seems to get tired. Probably the one Floyd song that isn't out played.

I agree. Love all of his 70's music, Nylon Curtain, and Innocent Man particularly, and some of The Bridge. Storm Front not so much

"Just the Way You Are" was nicely done even though the context of its subject is something Billy has long since abandoned.

Re: Songs that don't age

I'll have to go with Billy Joel's 70's output. Amazing stuff. It must have been wonderful to get album after album of this stuff when it was brand new.

Boston's More Than a Feeling still seems to hold up. (The whole album does for me).

Iron Man - Black Sabbath. When I tell friends that that song is 40some years old they can't believe it. I then show then youtube links of a young Ozzy singing it back in 1970.

This genre is thoroughly timeless:
