Blind Musical Taste Test #9 - Funk/Hard Rock

This one could be interesting. I'm willing to bet that most of you have never heard of these guys, but they really crossed some musical boundaries and blurred a lot of lines (long before other bands crossed those same lines).

Again, please don't post the name of the band on the odd chance that you know who they are...

I enjoy these blind tests, but I hate this so much I feel like running out my door and slapping the first person who passes by.

Spoiler:
I've only heard early Mother's Finest, but it reminds me of that a tad bit. Pukey Atlanta band.

Almost all of these sound like they were produced between 1983 and 1986.

Sounds like a bad Living Colour cover band.

I like it. Who couldn't get into those vocals? Admittedly, if you take those out there's not much left to the song, but who cares? It's fucking fun to hear. Yes, the production dates it, but there really isn't much recorded music that you can't say that about. If I was forced to rank the music presented in these threads, this would be the best.

I made it about 34 seconds. Oof!

I don't know how dated it would be though - I hear the low B on the bass. I don't think 5-strings were common until the 90's.

1995 was fifteen years ago. That's an eternity for today's musical attention span.

Yes but you said the production dates it. I took that to mean the audio sound. Frankly it sounds pretty well recorded and mixed and could be much newer than 1995.

Now I won't argue the content is dated.

This doesn't even come up on Shazam. I'm guessing unsigned or amateur band.

Re: Blind Musical Taste Test #9 - Funk/Hard Rock

I knew this one would get a pretty far ranging set of opinions. I posted it primarily because the band is really interesting, as is the album that this song comes from. For me there are some really good things about the song, but I know that for other people it hits all the wrong notes.

Spoiler:
It is Mother's Finest, from their 1992 album, Black Radio Won't Play This Record. (Produced by Thom Panunzio.)

The title alone is worth the price of admission, but there are some good riffs, some funky beats, and some solid melodies on display - as well as Joyce "Baby Jean" Kennedy's powerful vocals. I love the combination of the big voiced Soul/R&B singer and a funky Hard Rock guitar riff. That's just me, but I figured even if you don't like it you probably haven't heard a female R&B type vocalist like that singing Hard Rock before and you might find it interesting.

For me the worst thing by far were the lyrics.

Guitar licks seemed very cliche too.
