Wes Craven
Sure he's made a lot of crap, but he's also made some genre classics and a few underrated gems.

For some reason I didn't know he directed Swamp Thing until I read this poll.
Anyway, voted for A Nightmare on Elm Street, since The Hills Have Eyes Part II isn't on the poll.

Re: Wes Craven
Like everyone else, I'm going with ANoES, since that's the only true masterpiece he's done.
But, just so you know my preferences, my second fav is probably LHotL.

I watched The People Under the Stairs twenty times as a kid. Since i'm not particularly partial to ANY of those films, I will go with that.
It hasn't held up extremely well, but it's still his most entertaining movie, IMO.

Just picked up The Serpent and the Rainbow recently, it's held up very well. We really enjoyed it, was just as creepy as I'd remembered it was. Nightmare on Elm Street just seems silly to me anymore. -kd5-

Re: Wes Craven
I chose Red Eye, because it's a very underrated piece of work: it's extremely streamlined, tightly edited, doesn't try to complicate the plot with pointless twists or put it within some larger context, contains a good amount of thrills and creative conflicts between Cillian Murphy and Rachel McAdams (even more creative seeing as how they packed tightly on an airplane for most of the film), and rolls credits before it even hits the 90-minute mark. And Craven still found a way to work in a rocket launcher.
By and large though, I think he's a pretty disappointing director. Nightmare on Elm Street is good, but I think it's been surpassed by other entries, including Craven's own New Nightmare. Last House on the Left and The Hills Have Eyes are both ridiculously awful, laughably amateurish efforts, never understood the love for the Scream films (and even more, never understood why people think it's a "satire" or a "clever twist on the genre"), thought Cursed was a disaster (though I think that was more the Weinsteins' fault than Craven's)...Deadly Friend, Vampire in Brooklyn, Hills Have Eyes 2, Deadly Blessing, Music of the Heart, all bland, boring efforts that could have been made by any hack. From the interviews with Craven I've seen and read, he sounds like a very nice, very soft spoken, intelligent man, so I have no idea why he makes such crap.
I will say though, that I have this odd affection for Shocker. Go figure.

I picked Last House on the Left(1972). I love it for all the reasons other hate it. The raw amateurish nature of the directing and editing, the folk music soundtrack, the cops, the dark humor, the wild shifts in tone. It all works wonderfully because of those 'flaws' and wouldn't be the same if it were more polished, which is why the remake was so dull.
Much like Red Eye which Greenvulture mentions. This film is also not a bloated piece of work and moves at a nice pace and is never dull for a minute and never over stays its welcome. It's a really wild raw film that delivers a unique experience with it's quirky tone that really pulls the rug out from under you on how to react to the material.
